Alexandre Pato-led consortium nears Northampton Town stake acquisition

Northampton Town are on the brink of welcoming one of modern football’s most recognisable forwards into their boardroom, with a consortium involving Alexandre Pato agreeing a proposed shareholding acquisition in the League Two club.

The group, led by Sports Alpha Capital (SAC), has already cleared two major hurdles. The Independent Football Regulator (IFR) and the English Football League (EFL) both approved the proposed deal earlier this month, removing the biggest regulatory obstacles and paving the way for completion.

Now the club say they expect to be “in a position to confirm completion of the process” next week. The finish line is in sight.

Club chairman Kelvin Thomas acknowledged the complexity of the process but made clear the mood around Sixfields is upbeat rather than anxious. Football ownership deals rarely move in straight lines, and this one has been no exception, but Northampton’s hierarchy are clearly confident the final details are close to being tied down.

Joao Xavier, founding partner at Sports Alpha Capital, underlined that sense of progress, describing the formal agreements as a significant milestone after the earlier approvals from the IFR and EFL. The consortium’s focus is now on closing the transaction in the coming days.

SAC are not strangers to the lower reaches of the English pyramid. They held talks over a potential takeover of Colchester United earlier this year before stepping away after initial discussions. This time, with Northampton, the talks have gone the distance.

The size of SAC’s proposed stake in the Cobblers has not been disclosed, leaving the precise balance of power and influence still to be revealed. What is clear is the presence of heavyweight backing. Pato is listed by SAC as one of its investors, alongside Gemcorp Capital, a London-based independent investment management firm.

For Northampton supporters, Pato’s name adds a dash of glamour to a deal that otherwise lives in the world of regulatory approvals, share structures and investment vehicles. Now 37 and retired from playing since last year, the Brazilian is best remembered for his explosive emergence at AC Milan, where he scored 63 goals in 150 appearances and lifted the Serie A title in 2010-11.

From San Siro to Sixfields is quite a journey. The real intrigue now is what that journey will mean for a club fighting to climb the EFL ladder.
