Alisson Becker has been hit with an £8,000 fine by the Football Association after the Liverpool goalkeeper lost his cool at the final whistle and vented his anger on the fourth official’s electronic numbers board.
The incident unfolded in the tunnel area after full-time, with Alisson’s frustration boiling over in the wake of a controversial late penalty decision.
In a statement, the FA confirmed the charge and punishment: the goalkeeper was accused of acting “in an improper manner around the tunnel area after the final whistle.” Alisson accepted the charge and received what the FA described as the standard penalty.
The flashpoint stemmed from a dramatic moment involving Neco Williams. A penalty was awarded for a foul on the defender even though his shot had already been released before contact was made. Alisson reacted furiously to the decision on the pitch and clearly carried that anger with him as he headed back towards the dressing room.
Tension had already been building in the technical area. In the lead-up to the incident, the fourth official’s numbers board malfunctioned, delaying a planned triple substitution from Andoni Iraola. The stoppage added to the sense of chaos around a key phase of the game, and when the penalty was given, Liverpool’s goalkeeper snapped.
The fallout has not stopped there. The Key Match Incident (KMI) Panel has since ruled that referee Sam Barrott made the wrong decision in awarding the spot-kick, a verdict that will only sharpen the sense of injustice on Merseyside.
The fine will stand. So will the frustration.
