Arsenal’s long pursuit of Julian Alvarez has flickered back into life on Deadline Day, with the Atletico Madrid forward now thought to be reconsidering a switch to north London.
Mikel Arteta has pushed hard for Alvarez all summer, viewing the Argentine as a dream addition to his attack. Arsenal’s interest cooled earlier in August as they turned their attention to Vinicius Jr, only for that chase to fail and talks over Alvarez to restart last week.
Up to that point, the story had been simple and brutal for Arsenal: Alvarez wanted out of Atletico, but he wanted only Barcelona. He has described the Catalan giants as his “dream” move, and The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported last week that the 26-year-old had told Arteta directly he was not interested in joining the Gunners.
Now the picture is shifting.
TEAMtalk report that Arsenal are working quietly in the background to clear a path for Alvarez to move to London, and that the player is no longer completely closed off to the idea. The door that looked bolted has been nudged ajar.
The key, though, is not just Alvarez himself. His extended family, who have been living with him in Madrid, are central to any decision. His preference, according to the reports, is to relocate with them, turning a straightforward transfer into a more complex logistical operation involving visas, housing and support structures away from the pitch.
Arsenal are said to be fully aware of those demands and ready to help shoulder them. For a club often meticulous in their planning under Arteta and sporting director Edu, this is another layer of negotiation: not just with Atletico and the player, but with the realities of his life off the field.
There is another twist. To tempt Alvarez away from his Barcelona dream, Arsenal are understood to be open to including a so‑called “Barcelona clause” in any agreement. Such a provision could allow the forward to move to the Camp Nou in the future, giving him a clear route to his preferred destination while committing his prime years, at least in the short term, to the Emirates.
For Arsenal, it would be a compromise with risk attached. They could land a forward Arteta has coveted all summer, fully aware that the lure of Barcelona may still call him away down the line.
For Alvarez, it offers a bridge: London now, Catalonia later.
With the window closing and options narrowing across Europe, that kind of compromise might be exactly what drags this saga over the line.
