Arsenal have lost a Deadline Day battle they thought they were controlling.
Mikel Arteta’s side had zeroed in on Lyon winger Malick Fofana to plug a growing gap on the flanks, opening talks with the French club on Monday and positioning themselves as the 21-year-old’s preferred destination. The player was keen. Conversations were held with Arteta. The path looked clear.
Then Sunderland walked straight through the door Arsenal had left half open.
According to reports from Santi Aouna and David Ornstein, Arsenal refused to go to Lyon’s asking price of around €40 million, holding their line in negotiations. That hesitation proved costly. Sunderland stepped in with a €30 million offer plus add-ons, a structure that pushes the total package closer to Lyon’s demands and, crucially, got a quick green light.
The result: Fofana is heading to the north east for a medical, not north London.
It is a jarring twist. Fofana had already been on Crystal Palace’s radar earlier in the summer, with the Eagles close to an agreement with Lyon, but the winger did not want a move to Selhurst Park. Arsenal, with their Champions League ambitions and clear need on the left, looked a far more natural fit.
Instead, it is Sunderland who have moved with conviction when it mattered most.
For Arsenal, the timing could hardly be worse. The club have already sanctioned exits for Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli this summer, leaving Arteta light on the left flank at precisely the moment the schedule begins to bite. Ethan Nwaneri is also set for a medical at Borussia Dortmund ahead of a loan move, trimming the attacking options further, even if Christos Tzolis has arrived from Club Brugge earlier in the window.
Arsenal wanted depth, dynamism, and another one‑v‑one threat out wide. They identified the profile, opened the talks, and had the manager speak to the player. But when the numbers hardened, they blinked.
Sunderland didn’t. And on Deadline Day, that’s all that counts.
