Barcelona’s search for a left-footed centre-back has taken another sharp turn, and this time it’s away from two of the most talked-about names on the market.
Matteo Moretto, who has been tracking the operation closely, has ruled out both Castello Lukeba and Goncalo Inacio as options for the Catalan club, cutting through weeks of speculation with one clear message: the defender Barça are working on is someone else.
Flick wants a specialist – but not the obvious ones
Hansi Flick has made it clear internally that he wants a natural left-footed defender to reshape his back line. The profile is specific: someone comfortable building from the left, able to give the team balance in possession and another specialist option in a squad that has often had to improvise in that area.
Barcelona have been moving quietly, almost in the shadows, to find that player. Moretto’s latest information adds a key detail: the chosen target does not play in Spain and is not a household name for casual fans.
Naturally, that description pushed one name to the front of the debate – Castello Lukeba.
The RB Leipzig defender has been followed by Barcelona’s scouting department, and Flick is known to appreciate his ability to operate both at centre-back and left-back. On paper, he ticks a lot of boxes: young, left-footed, tactically flexible, already used to high-intensity football in Germany.
Yet that trail has now gone cold.
Lukeba: admired, but “100%” not the one
Despite the admiration and previous links, Moretto has shut the door firmly on Lukeba. He has ruled out the Leipzig defender’s profile “100%” as the one Barça are currently negotiating for, ending the idea that the 23-year-old is the mystery signing in waiting.
It’s not a question of talent. Lukeba would have brought versatility, the ability to cover several roles across the defensive line, and natural comfort on the left side – precisely the area Barcelona are trying to reinforce.
But the club’s actual operation is pointing in another direction. The message from the journalist is blunt: Barça are not simply choosing from the obvious, high-profile names already in circulation. They are working on a different, less exposed profile.
Inacio also off the table
The same goes for Goncalo Inacio.
The Sporting CP centre-back has been repeatedly mentioned as a potential solution, another left-footed defender with top-level experience and a growing reputation in Europe. On the surface, he fits the narrative perfectly.
Yet Moretto’s comments make it clear that Inacio, like Lukeba, is not part of Barcelona’s current plan. The Portuguese international can also be crossed off the list.
The key clue lies in the level of recognition attached to the real target. According to Moretto, the player Barça are working on is less well known than both Lukeba and Inacio. That detail matters. It explains the silence, the lack of leaks, and the absence of a clear favourite in public debate.
A low-profile bet behind closed doors
Barcelona’s sporting department appear determined to keep this deal as quiet as possible. No grand names, no daily briefings, no drip-feeding of negotiations. Just a discreet push for a defender who, for now, sits outside the usual carousel of transfer rumours.
The strategy is clear: avoid an auction, avoid inflating the price, and land a left-footed centre-back who fits Flick’s demands without the noise that usually surrounds a Barça signing.
The names of Lukeba and Inacio are now off the table.
