Barnsley have moved to strengthen their back line with the season-long loan signing of Blackburn Rovers defender Connor O'Riordan, securing an option to make the deal permanent next summer.
The 22-year-old centre-back, capped by Republic of Ireland at Under-21 level, arrives with fresh League One experience already under his belt. He spent the first half of last season with Doncaster Rovers, adapting to the division’s physical edge before returning to Ewood Park in January.
Back at Blackburn, O'Riordan forced his way into the first-team picture, making six appearances in all competitions for the Championship side. It was a glimpse of his potential at a higher level, and enough to attract Barnsley’s interest as they look to tighten up defensively and add depth for a long campaign.
Now he drops back into League One with a point to prove and a clear pathway. Impress, and the loan becomes a long-term move.
O'Riordan is in line to make his Tykes debut as soon as Saturday, when Barnsley travel to Leyton Orient. A new club, a new back four, and possibly his first step towards a permanent home at Oakwell.
