Basil Tuma’s remarkable rise continued this week as the Aldershot Town winger was named in Malta’s provisional 29-man squad for their upcoming international window.
It is another sharp step forward for a 21-year-old who has already taken the long road to the European stage.
From Reading prospect to Shots livewire
Tuma only arrived at Aldershot Town in the summer, signing from Reading with promise rather than pedigree. He has wasted no time turning that promise into end product.
Eight appearances into his National League career, he has helped drive the Shots into eighth place with 15 points, injecting pace and direct running into their attack. For a club trying to re-establish itself near the top end of the table, his impact has been immediate and obvious.
The reward has now come at international level.
Uganda roots, Maltese colours
Born in Uganda, Tuma first pulled on national colours for his homeland at the 2020 CECAFA Under-17 Championship. That early exposure to tournament football set a platform, but his path soon took a different turn.
By September 2022, Malta had moved to bring him into their system, handing him a place in the Under-19s. Two years later, the senior call arrived.
He made his Malta debut in October 2024, coming on at half-time and winning a penalty – a telling contribution that underlined exactly why the national setup had pursued him. Since that breakthrough, he has added seven more caps, quickly becoming a regular feature in the squad.
Nations League test ahead
Now comes another test of his growing stature.
Malta face a busy run of three UEFA Nations League fixtures over the next two weeks, starting with a trip to Andorra on 24 September. After that, they return home for a friendly against Liechtenstein on 27 September, a useful chance for the coaching staff to fine-tune their options and assess fringe players.
Then the schedule tightens again. Gibraltar visit Malta on 1 October in another Nations League clash, before the return fixture against Andorra on home soil on 4 October.
For Tuma, it is an opportunity: to turn club form into international influence, to turn raw potential into something more permanent. If his start at Aldershot is any guide, Malta may have found a winger ready to shape their next chapter.
