Brian Sorensen is set to step back into international football with a pivotal role in the Republic of Ireland’s Women’s World Cup push, joining the squad as assistant coach for their play-off qualifiers later this year.
The former Everton manager will work alongside Liverpool coach Amber Whiteley in a refreshed backroom team designed to sharpen Ireland’s edge at the most pressurised point of their campaign. His appointment adds another experienced voice to a technical staff already led by Carla Ward.
Sorensen will not leave his current post. He is expected to retain his position as technical director with Aston Villa women, linking up with the Republic of Ireland only during international windows. It’s a dual role that underlines his growing influence in the women’s game and Ireland’s determination to tap into that expertise without compromise.
There is already a shared history in the dugout. Ward and Sorensen previously stood opposite each other in the Women’s Super League when she was in charge of Villa and he led Everton. Now they join forces with a clear, short-term mission: navigate a tricky play-off route and keep Ireland’s World Cup hopes alive.
Upcoming Play-Offs
The first hurdle is Kazakhstan in a two-legged first-round tie, scheduled for 9 and 13 October. On paper, Ireland will be favourites. In reality, play-offs rarely follow the script.
That is exactly why they have turned to Sorensen.
