Erling Haaland is usually the conversation. This week, he’s the complication.
Gameweek 2 in Fantasy Premier League opens with Manchester City’s No 9 under the Friday night lights at Crystal Palace, backed by gigantic ownership and the usual armband avalanche. Yet the numbers – and the fixtures – drag the spotlight firmly towards Old Trafford and one man: Bruno Fernandes.

None of this turns Haaland into a bad pick. Far from it.
He remains the top-scoring player in away fixtures across 2025/26 and walks into Selhurst Park as the most explosive asset in the game. One chance, one header, one penalty, and he can punish anyone who dared look elsewhere.
But the numbers don’t lie about his away profile. More blanks, fewer double-digit hauls, more variance. When City are not fully flowing, that volatility shows.
Palace at home to City is rarely a walkover. It’s not a fixture you avoid, but it’s also not the dream scenario that Ipswich at Old Trafford offers Fernandes.
The Midfielders Forcing Their Way In
Just as the Haaland–Fernandes debate heats up, three midfielders have barged into the captaincy conversation with immediate impact.
Martin Odegaard (£6.6m), Cole Palmer (£9.5m) and Joao Pedro (£7.6m) all exploded out of the blocks in Gameweek 1, each posting a double-figure haul.
Odegaard, deployed in the most advanced central role behind Kai Havertz in Arsenal’s opener, scored and collected 11 points against Coventry City. He now travels to an Aston Villa side still reeling from a 4-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. Arsenal’s captain sits higher up the pitch, on set-pieces, and looks every inch the talisman again.
Palmer and Joao Pedro, Chelsea’s dual threat, wasted no time either. Both produced a goal and an assist away to Fulham in their first match of 2026/27, immediately justifying their price tags and pre-season hype. Like Fernandes, they return home in Gameweek 2, this time to face Brighton.
Palmer offers penalties, creativity, and a central role in Chelsea’s attacking patterns. Joao Pedro adds direct threat, movement in behind, and another route to points in the same fixture. For managers hunting for a differential armband without drifting into recklessness, these two sit firmly on the radar.
