Calvin Oftana Joins Gilas as Late Asiad Call-Up
NAGOYA, Japan – No drama. No debate. Once Calvin Oftana’s name became an option again, the choice for Gilas Pilipinas’ 12th man was almost automatic.
Tim Cone didn’t dress it up. For this system, for this group, Oftana was the plug-and-play piece he’d been waiting to use.
“Because of the system we are running and his previous experience in the window teams, he's a plug and play player and will fit right in,” Cone said in a message from Aichi Prefecture, underlining what the coaching staff has long believed: Oftana already speaks the Gilas language.
The lone holdover from a golden run
Oftana is not just another body to fill out the roster. At the 20th Asian Games, he will be the only returning member of the 2022 squad that ended the country’s 61-year gold medal drought with a gritty 70-60 win over Jordan in the final.
Everyone else from that historic run is gone. Systems evolve, faces change, but Gilas will still have one player who knows exactly how it feels to carry that pressure and come out with gold around his neck.
That matters in tournaments like this. When the games tighten and the noise rises, familiarity with the stage can steady a locker room.
A race against time – and against injuries
The 30-year-old TNT forward landed in Japan just before noon on Wednesday, arriving with NLEX team governor Ronald Dulatre. No fanfare, no welcome parade. Just a quick turnaround and straight back to work.
He is expected to join Gilas practice later in the day, needing only a brief refresher with Cone’s schemes rather than a full crash course. That’s the advantage of a player the coach already trusts in this environment.
The twist is how close this came to not happening.
Even before Oftana begged off from joining the national team for the fourth window of the FIBA World Cup 2027 Asian qualifiers, Cone and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas had already placed his name on the long list submitted to the Nagoya Asian Games Organizing Committee. He was always in the plans, sitting in the background, waiting on one thing: his body.
Oftana suffered hamstring and toe injuries during TNT Tropang Giga’s campaign in the PBA 50th Season Commissioner’s Cup, a run that ended with a finals loss to Barangay Ginebra. The knocks raised real doubt over whether he could be pushed into another intense international grind this soon.
“Calvin was always on the list to play, but we were uncertain of his health status,” said Cone, 68. “But he has since returned to TNT's practice and is good to go.”
That was the green light Gilas needed.
From Gameville to Gilas
TNT had already been dropping hints. The club’s social media reels showed Oftana back at work at Gameville Ball Park, moving well, reintegrating with the Tropang Giga. Each clip looked less like rehab and more like a player sharpening up for something bigger.
Now the destination is clear.
From Gameville to Nagoya, from club drills to national duty, Oftana steps into a Gilas side that doesn’t have time for experiments. Cone wants reliability, shooting, size on the wing, and someone who can slide into the existing framework without slowing the group down.
Oftana checks every box.
He arrives as the last man in, but not as an afterthought. In a tournament that once again tests the ceiling of Philippine basketball, the late call-up might just be the piece that makes the system hum at the right moment.
