Chelsea's Moisés Caicedo Fitness Worry Ahead of Arsenal Derby

Chelsea face an anxious wait over Moisés Caicedo’s fitness on the eve of their biggest test of the season so far.

Twenty-four hours before they meet the reigning Premier League champions, the Blues still do not know if their midfield enforcer will be able to play. The 24-year-old has already missed the opening-day win over Fulham and the Carabao Cup victory against Luton Town. His campaign has barely begun and it is already stop-start.

He did return, briefly, in that wild 4-3 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday. Sent on in the 68th minute, he was supposed to help close the game down. Instead, he lasted just 14 minutes before sinking to the turf, medical staff rushing on as Stamford Bridge held its breath. He walked off under his own power, but the repeat nature of the problem has set alarm bells ringing at Cobham.

Since then, everything has pointed to one thing: a late, nervy call.

Alonso’s balancing act

At his pre-match press conference on Friday, Alonso cut a careful figure. Asked directly about Caicedo’s availability, the Chelsea manager refused to commit.

“We will check tomorrow, tomorrow is the last decision for the squad on Sunday,”

he told reporters, making it clear that the medical team will dictate the final call. He urged calm around a player who has become central to Chelsea’s identity. “We [need to] not worry, we need to check tomorrow and take the final decision.”

Caicedo is not just another name on the teamsheet. The Ecuador international is vice-captain behind Reece James and has already made 149 appearances for the club since arriving from Brighton in August 2023. In a season that ended with Chelsea marooned in 10th, he was one of the few constants, anchoring a side that often looked anything but stable.

Losing him for a derby against Arsenal, with both sides perfect from their opening two league games, would be a significant blow.

Life after Enzo

This is not the same Chelsea midfield that finished last season. Enzo Fernandez has gone to Manchester City, ripping out one of the core pieces of Alonso’s structure. The club moved aggressively to reshape the centre of the pitch, bringing in Valentin Barco and experienced campaigner Jordan Henderson to give their manager options.

Alonso insists those options are real, not just names on a squad list. He talked up the different profiles at his disposal, the blend he believes can carry Chelsea through a demanding run.

“[We have] different qualities, personalities,”

he said. “Valentin’s young, but he has come with great energy. We have Hendo, he has the composure, the mentality, he knows what’s going on in the games. He’s getting closer, closer to playing time.”

That is the plan: youthful legs, veteran brains, and tactical flexibility to survive if Caicedo fails his fitness test.

Derby on the line

The stakes on Sunday are obvious. Arsenal arrive with maximum points after beating Coventry City and Aston Villa. Chelsea have matched them, edging past Fulham and then Brighton. Something has to give.

If Caicedo does not make it, Alonso will reshuffle. He name-checked Romeo Lavia, Reece James and Malo Gusto as players who can operate in different roles to plug gaps and keep the system intact.

“We have Rom (Romeo Lavia), Reece (James) as well, Malo (Gusto) – he can play [in midfield],”

the manager said, underlining his belief that the structure matters more than any single name.

Even so, derbies are often decided in the middle of the pitch. Control, duels, second balls. That is Caicedo’s domain.

Chelsea will find out on Saturday whether their vice-captain can patrol it again, or whether Alonso’s rebuilt midfield has to prove itself ahead of schedule against the champions.
