Chelsea’s Koné chase isn’t over – it’s just on pause.
The window has slammed shut, but Manu Koné’s name is still moving through boardrooms and back channels. The French midfielder dominated the final hours of the summer market, as Chelsea made a late push to drag him to London and opened talks with Roma.
It went nowhere. Not because of a lack of money or interest, but because of one man.
Gian Piero Gasperini drew a hard line. The Roma coach sees Koné as a cornerstone of his project and refused to sanction a sale. His stance helped kill the deal at source, blocking what could have been one of the Premier League’s more eye-catching midfield moves of the summer.
That resistance has kept Koné in Rome for now, but it hasn’t cooled the pursuit.
Sport.FR in France reports that Chelsea remain firmly on the trail and are already eyeing the winter window as their next opening. The London club’s interest has survived the deadline-day drama and the collapse of negotiations; it has simply been pushed down the calendar.
So the picture is clear. Koné stays at Roma. Gasperini keeps a player he trusts and values. But the story is still alive.
January is not far away, and Chelsea look ready to knock on Trigoria’s door again. The question is whether Gasperini’s veto will be as strong when the market reopens and the pressure – and the offers – inevitably rise.
