Cole Palmer has been forced to step away from England duty just as his international story was threatening to catch fire again.
The Chelsea forward will withdraw from Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures after suffering a minor injury, cutting short a recall that already carried a hint of redemption about it.
Tuchel had brought the 24-year-old back into the fold after leaving him out of England’s World Cup squad – a decision that sparked fierce debate at the time. The manager did not shy away from the challenge laid at Palmer’s feet, saying the attacker had a “point to prove” and needed “to step up” to “keep his shirt and justify the nomination”.
Palmer looked ready to do exactly that. A full summer to stew on his World Cup omission, a full pre-season to sharpen the edges, and then a flying start with Chelsea: six starts in seven league games, five full 90-minute outings, four goals, two assists. The numbers backed up the eye test. He was playing like a man determined not to be overlooked again.
Then came Friday night at Brentford. Palmer completed another full match in Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat, but the cost has now become clear. The knock is understood to be minor, yet significant enough to rule him out of what was set to be an extended and demanding international window.

This latest setback does not fall into the same category in terms of seriousness, but it lands at a delicate moment. Palmer’s last appearance for England came in March, a 1-0 friendly defeat by Japan. Since then, he has had to watch major tournaments from home and listen to the debate about whether he belongs among the country’s attacking elite.
Tuchel’s recall looked like the start of a new chapter: a manager calling him out, a player responding, a narrative building. Instead, England’s Nations League campaign will begin without him, and Palmer’s attempt to re-establish himself on the international stage is put on hold once more.
