At 35, with World Cups and Champions League nights already behind him, Danilo has finally put a date on the end.
The veteran defender, speaking at Flamengo’s Ninho do Urubu training ground, revealed he is working towards signing what he intends to be the final contract of his career – and he wants that last dance to be in red and black in 2027.
For now, talks are calm. Deliberate. And, crucially, moving in the right direction.
World Cup strain, late-career clarity
Danilo admitted that the grind of international duty had pushed contract talks into the background while he focused on staying at the required level physically.
“In 2026, I had very little time to reflect and assess; there was a World Cup in between, and at 35 years old, I had to dedicate myself immensely physically to measure up and be well prepared,” he said.
That tournament cycle, with all its demands, left little room for long-term planning. Only now, with the international dust settling, has he been able to sit down with Flamengo’s hierarchy and map out the final stretch of his career.
“Now is when I've had more peace of mind to think about it. Flamengo and I have been talking, and I hope 2027 is the year we can be together so I can play the final year of my career.”
A clean negotiation with a clear end point
Danilo, who built his European reputation at Real Madrid and Manchester City, was keen to stress that the renewal process has been smooth. No brinkmanship. No stand-off.
The conversations, he says, have been marked by mutual understanding and a shared objective.
“We have spoken very calmly. Both sides share the desire to move forward, to put together another beautiful year, and a year where I can truly say ‘this is the last year of my career’ and finish at the club of my heart, in a project I believed in and that has been working.”
He made it clear there are no major hurdles in the way.
“I don't think there are any obstacles preventing this from happening, and hopefully in 2027 we can be together, finish my career at Flamengo, and, God willing, win a major trophy – that would be wonderful.”
A farewell with silverware?
For Danilo, this is not just about a testimonial season or a sentimental goodbye. He wants one more serious run at a major title with the club he calls the “club of my heart.”
The plan is simple and ambitious: sign on, lead, and leave with a trophy in his hands.
If Flamengo and Danilo formalise what both sides clearly want, 2027 will not just mark the end of a long career. It will become the year he tries to write its final chapter in bold letters, in the shirt that matters most to him.
