At 35, with a World Cup already squeezed into a crowded calendar and the miles of a long European career in his legs, Danilo says he finally has the headspace to plan how it all ends – and where.
The defender, who made his name in Europe with Real Madrid and Manchester City, revealed at a press conference at Flamengo’s Ninho do Urubu training ground that his energy in recent seasons has been consumed by international duty, leaving little room for long-term reflection.
“In 2026, I had very little time to reflect and assess; there was a World Cup in between, and at 35 years old, I had to dedicate myself immensely physically to measure up and be well prepared,” he said, outlining how the demands of the international stage delayed any serious talk about his future.
Now, the picture is clearer. The conversations with Flamengo have started, and they have a very specific target: 2027.
“Now is when I've had more peace of mind to think about it. Flamengo and I have been talking, and I hope 2027 is the year we can be together so I can play the final year of my career,” Danilo explained.
No drama. No brinkmanship. Just a veteran quietly aligning the last chapter of his career with the club he calls home.
The former Madrid and City man underlined that renewal talks have moved forward smoothly, describing a process free of tension or stumbling blocks for either side. The tone is calm, almost serene, as if both parties know exactly what they want from each other.
“We have spoken very calmly. Both sides share the desire to move forward, to put together another beautiful year, and a year where I can truly say ‘this is the last year of my career’ and finish at the club of my heart, in a project I believed in and that has been working,” he said.
This is not just a contract discussion; it is a carefully drawn farewell. Danilo is explicit: he wants to close his playing days at Flamengo, the club he describes as “the club of my heart”, and he wants that final season to carry weight.
“I don't think there are any obstacles preventing this from happening, and hopefully in 2027 we can be together, finish my career at Flamengo, and, God willing, win a major trophy – that would be wonderful.”
One last year. One last push for silverware in red and black. Danilo has drawn his finish line. Now Flamengo must decide what kind of stage they can build for his final act.
