As Devin Carter hits waivers again, the Miami Heat are staring at a decision that blends sentiment, history, and hard-nosed roster calculus. The franchise has long shown a soft spot for bloodlines — sons of former players, or players whose families have roots inside the organization. Carter checks that box as clearly as anyone on the market.

His father, Anthony Carter, carved out the first four seasons of his 13-year NBA career in Miami, then returned to the franchise as an assistant coach before moving on to the Grizzlies’ bench. Those ties matter in Miami. They always have. Relationships open doors.

But they don’t guarantee contracts.

Devin Carter arrived in the league as a promising guard out of Providence, taken 13th overall in the 2024 draft. At that point, he looked like the type of two-way backcourt piece teams chase for years — energetic, competitive, capable of fitting into a structured system.
