Edson Álvarez has moved to firmly distance himself from explosive allegations in Mexico linking his name to an alleged kidnapping plot, insisting he has nothing to do with the case and is ready to fight back legally.
The West Ham and Mexico captain issued a forceful statement on social media after film producer Juan José López Ordoñez claimed he was abducted at gunpoint in Mexico City earlier this year by relatives of Álvarez’s former father-in-law, Jonathan Toache Bedolla.
López Ordoñez told Mexican outlet TV Notas that he had been commissioned to produce a documentary on Álvarez’s life and was owed £150,000 for the project. He alleged that Álvarez was aware of the plan to kidnap him, though he did not accuse the midfielder of direct involvement in the armed abduction in the Polanco district.
Álvarez, capped by Mexico since 2017 and now the national team’s captain, responded with a categorical denial and signalled he is considering legal action.
“I categorically reject any allegation or attempt to associate my name with events, conflicts, or conduct that are entirely unrelated to me,” he wrote, stressing that his image was being used to fuel a story in which he insists he plays no part.
He accused sections of the media of chasing headlines at his expense, saying his name had been repeatedly used “to generate greater media attention around a situation that has nothing to do with me.”
For months he had chosen silence. That changed with this latest round of claims.
“Until now, I had chosen not to respond,” Álvarez said. “However, there are limits, and attributing knowledge, responsibility, or involvement in matters of this nature to me without presenting a single piece of evidence clearly crosses that line.”
He criticised outlets he believes are prioritising “sensationalism” over “accuracy and truth” and made clear his intention is to keep his focus on his family and his career while exploring legal options.
Álvarez joined West Ham from Ajax in 2023 and has quickly become a key figure in their midfield, making 74 appearances for the Hammers. This season, though, his involvement has been minimal so far, restricted to a single outing in the Carabao Cup against Portsmouth, as serious off-field noise now swirls around one of Mexico’s most prominent footballers.
