Elgin Baylor's Legacy Battle in Probate Court

Elgin Baylor spent a lifetime soaring above conflict on the court. Three years after his death, the battle over his legacy is being fought in a far less graceful arena — probate court.

According to court documents filed in Los Angeles and obtained by TMZ, Baylor’s daughter, Alison Clayton, has petitioned the court, accusing her stepmother, Elaine Baylor, of keeping her in the dark about her inheritance and the details of the Hall of Famer’s estate.

Baylor died on March 22, 2021, at the age of 86. Alison claims she and her brother were never told by Elaine that their father had passed away, despite Elaine being with Elgin at the time of his death. In the filing, Alison says that, even years later, Elaine has refused to share any information about the estate or what, if anything, has been left to Baylor’s children.

The family fracture, Alison says, did not come out of nowhere. She moved to the East Coast in 1991 but maintains she stayed in touch with her father until around 2018. According to her petition, Elaine knew that relationship existed and still chose to shut her out when the final chapter of Baylor’s life was written.

For now, the case sits in a tense holding pattern. Elaine has not yet responded in court, leaving Alison’s allegations unanswered and the scope of Baylor’s estate undisclosed.

It’s a bitter postscript to a towering basketball life. Elgin Baylor, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1958 NBA Draft, played 14 seasons for the Lakers and carved out a place among the game’s immortals. A prolific scorer and revolutionary forward, he earned enshrinement in the Basketball Hall of Fame and long-standing recognition as one of the greatest players the sport has ever seen.

On the court, his legacy is untouchable. Off it, his family is now asking a judge to decide how that legacy is shared.
