FC Groningen did not just beat PEC Zwolle on Friday night. They brushed them aside. A sharp, confident 3-0 win at the Euroborg lifted Dick Lukkien’s team up to sixth and left a fragile Zwolle side stuck in 16th, still carrying the scars of that 0-7 humiliation against Feyenoord.
Any hope of a measured response from the visitors vanished almost as soon as the game settled. Groningen seized control early, snapping into challenges, moving the ball with purpose, and pinning PEC Zwolle back. The visitors looked tentative, unsure whether to press or sit in. Groningen simply played around them.
The breakthrough came after 20 minutes and it was beautifully constructed. Marco Rente, stepping out from the back with confidence, slid a clever pass into the channel for Jorg Schreuders. The midfielder showed real composure, pausing just long enough to draw defenders before cutting the ball back into space. Thom van Bergen arrived, cool as you like, and guided his finish home for 1-0. Simple on the eye, ruthless in execution.
Zwolle wobbled. Groningen sensed it.
The pressure told again before the interval. Ryan Thomas lost the ball in a dangerous area, and Schreuders pounced. One touch to set himself, then a crisp strike with his supposedly weaker left foot from outside the box. The shot flew in, 2-0, and the Euroborg roared. Groningen had daylight; Zwolle had that familiar sinking feeling.
Lukkien’s side went into the break in complete control, their tempo and aggression too much for a PEC team still searching for any kind of stability after last weekend’s collapse.
Zwolle finally stirred after the restart. For the first time all evening, they carved out a genuine opening. A low cross from the left skidded into the area and found Gabriël Reiziger, who managed to get a touch. For a split second, it looked like a lifeline. The ball drifted just wide instead, and with it went any realistic hope of a comeback.
Groningen never panicked. They managed the game, kept PEC at arm’s length, and waited for the next chance to strike. It arrived on 68 minutes, from a set piece that had clearly been rehearsed on the training ground.
An indirect free-kick, a short lay-off, and Tygo Land stepped up with intent. He thundered his effort into the top corner, a stunning finish that made it 3-0 and underlined the gulf between the sides on the night. The home crowd loved it; Zwolle looked broken.
There was still time for Van Bergen to chase a second goal. When the ball dropped kindly to him in the penalty area, he seemed certain to score again. This time his left-footed effort lacked precision and slipped wide, a rare miss in a game where Groningen’s forwards had largely made the right decisions at the right moments.
The final whistle confirmed what had felt inevitable long before: FC Groningen, confident and clinical, climbing the table; PEC Zwolle, beaten again and searching for answers as the season starts to ask harder questions.
