But United’s underwhelming display against Hull has left a mark. The performance dragged confidence down, and Fernandes, as the premium asset in that side, carries the weight of that doubt.
He still has the underlying appeal: penalties, set pieces, and a central creative role. The fixture is kind. The mood around him is not. That tension explains the gap between him and Haaland in the poll, even if it remains a close race.
A Chelsea wildcard emerges
Beyond the two premium giants, only one other name has broken through the 5% barrier in the captaincy poll: Joao Pedro (£7.6m). Chelsea’s Brazilian forward faces his former club Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday, and the narrative writes itself.
He’s cheaper, he’s in form, and he’s rapidly becoming one of the most popular assets in the game. By the time the weekend kicks off, he could be the most-selected player in FPL. Managers are clearly tempted by the combination of price, role, and fixture at Stamford Bridge.
