Alvaro Arbeloa Faces Selection Challenge as Fulham Prepares for Manchester United
Alvaro Arbeloa will have to chase his first Premier League win as Fulham manager without one of his most reliable defenders.
Kenny Tete has been ruled out of Sunday’s clash with Manchester United, with Arbeloa confirming the right-back is still following concussion protocols after a blow to the head in the recent trip to Anfield.
“Tete won’t be available,” Arbeloa said, speaking to Fulhamish. “It’s a concussion after the ball hit him in the Anfield game, so he’s still not available. I think he’ll be ready for an international break. Unfortunately, he’s not ready for a Sunday.”
Fulham’s momentum meets a selection headache
Fulham arrive at this fixture with a shot of confidence after a wild 3-2 win over West Ham United in the EFL Cup, a tie that crackled with energy and gave Arbeloa his first real statement performance in the job. Now comes a different kind of test: turning cup chaos into league consistency against a Manchester United side still trying to find its own rhythm.
The Spaniard will again have to juggle his options.
Tom Cairney remains in recovery and is not yet fully ready to return. Ryan Sessegnon is touch and go after missing the last two competitive games, leaving Arbeloa to wait on late fitness news.
“Tom is still recovering… We need to see if Sess (Ryan Sessegnon) is available for Sunday,” he said.
The most significant confirmed absentee, though, is Tete. Not because he has been a regular under Arbeloa so far, but because of what his presence usually represents for Fulham.
Life without Tete at right-back
For years, Tete has been the club’s default answer at right-back, the dependable option who locks down that flank. Under Arbeloa, that hierarchy has shifted. The Dutchman has not held the same automatic status in the early stages of this new regime, and his future briefly looked uncertain in the summer.
A late-window move to Everton appeared to be on the cards, only for the deal to collapse when Fulham failed to secure a replacement. Tete stayed. His role, at least for now, changed.
On Sunday, his absence won’t rip up the game plan. It will simply strip away one layer of security.
Timothy Castagne is expected to keep his place on the right side of the back four, a role he has quietly made his own. The Belgian’s versatility and engine suit Arbeloa’s approach, and with no senior alternative right-back available on the bench, his importance spikes again.
On the opposite flank, Antonee Robinson will continue at left-back, regardless of whether Sessegnon proves his fitness in time. Robinson’s form and reliability have cemented him as first choice, and Arbeloa is unlikely to disturb one of the more settled positions in his side.
A thin margin against Manchester United
So Arbeloa goes into a pivotal home game with a clear defensive structure but limited room for manoeuvre. No Tete to call upon if Castagne needs to be pushed higher. No obvious like-for-like switch if the game demands a different look out wide.
The cup win over West Ham showed Fulham can live on the edge and still come out on top. Against Manchester United, with a patched-up squad and a manager chasing that first league victory, the margins will be slimmer.
Arbeloa has his shape. Now he needs his players to carry it through a full-blooded Premier League afternoon without one of their most experienced full-backs.
