Galatasaray left it late, but they landed their striker.
Turkish international Deniz Gul has completed a move from FC Porto to the reigning champions in a deal worth 10 million euros, sealed just before the transfer window slammed shut. Porto also secured a 10% share of any future profit, a clear sign the Portuguese club still believe the 22-year-old’s best years lie ahead.
A private jet, a chant, and a message
Gul arrived in Istanbul on 1 September 2026, touching down at Ataturk Airport by private jet. The scene was familiar, but no less telling: club officials waiting on the tarmac, supporters packed in behind barriers, phones raised, flags waving.
The new signing didn’t just wave and walk through. He grabbed the moment.
Stepping out to meet the crowd, Gul led the Galatasaray fans in a classic chant, immediately leaning into the atmosphere that will now define his week-to-week life. Then he was whisked away for medical examinations, the final formality before the club could announce him as their new No 9 option.
He made his feelings plain.
"I'm very happy. I'm very excited," Gul said. "I want to meet the team and our fans as soon as possible. The important thing for me right now is to be here. I'm here now and I'm focused on this."
The deal: long-term bet in attack
Galatasaray reported the agreement to the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP), confirming a five-year contract starting from the 2026-27 season. Gul will earn a guaranteed net annual salary of 1.5 million euros during his stay in Istanbul.
It is a long-term commitment on both sides. For Galatasaray, this is a strategic investment in a young forward with European pedigree. For Gul, it is a decisive step into a club where pressure is constant and goals are a demand, not a request.
He is expected to slot straight into first-team work. With his medical complete and paperwork signed, the striker will immediately join training under the coaching staff as Galatasaray gear up to defend their Super Lig crown and tackle another European campaign.
Stockholm roots, Turkish future
Gul’s story has always carried a cross-border edge.
Born and raised in Stockholm to a Turkish father and Swedish mother, he climbed through Swedish youth systems before breaking through at Hammarby IF. His scoring there turned heads across the continent and earned him a move to FC Porto in August 2024 on a contract running to 2029.
That stint in Portugal sharpened his game and exposed him to top-level European competition, the kind of experience Galatasaray value as they seek to deepen their squad for the demands of a long season.
On the international stage, Gul first pulled on Sweden’s colours at Under-19 level. The turning point came in November 2024, when he committed his senior future to Turkey. National team manager Vincenzo Montella rewarded that decision with a call-up for UEFA Nations League fixtures in March 2025, accelerating his rise into the senior setup.
Now, at 22, he steps into Turkish club football for the first time with a national-team badge already on his chest.
