His figures – 203736 – are those of a seasoned handicapper who keeps turning up and often runs his race. He doesn’t win many, but he doesn’t go down without a fight either.
Kc Bear adds a splash of youth to the mix. Only three, carrying 9-4 off 62, he’s already a course winner and shaped like one with upside in his 1-24287 record. The early win, the string of placed efforts, the single blip – it all points to a progressive type still learning the game. With Billy Lee booked, he’ll attract attention as the improver among the battle-hardened.
Then there’s Free Solo, a 9-year-old with plenty of miles in the legs but still dangerous when the mood takes him. On 9-6 and 61, with Ben Coen in the plate and CD by his name, he’s another who knows every inch of this track. His recent 706592 line might not dazzle, yet the placed effort suggests he can still latch on to a decent pace and stay on when others are wilting.
Scattered between them are a couple with bare form figures – 002080, 9-89260, 9900 – the sort that make punters wince and value-seekers lean in. They arrive out of sorts, but handicaps like this are built on redemption arcs, on horses who look gone at the game until the right trip, the right ground, and the right ride unlock something that’s been hidden all season.
Put it all together and the race shapes up as a clash of profiles: the in-and-out talents with proven course form, the solid old stagers who keep turning up, and the younger legs like Kc Bear who might just be on their way to something better.
The marks are tight. The margins will be tighter. One well-timed move could be the difference between another anonymous line of numbers and a form string suddenly lit up by a “1”.
