Hull City’s unveiling of Robinio Vaz should have been a simple moment of optimism: a 19-year-old striker arriving from Roma, a fresh option in attack, a season of possibilities ahead.
Instead, the announcement was poisoned within hours.
The club confirmed that Vaz, who has joined on a season-long loan from the Italian side, was subjected to what it described as “abhorrent racist abuse” after his signing was posted on social media on Tuesday. The post, which welcomed the French forward to East Yorkshire, has since been deleted.
Hull moved quickly. In a strongly worded statement, the club said it is working with Humberside Police and other authorities to track down those responsible for the messages, which it labelled “disgusting abuse”. The aim is clear: identify the accounts, and hold them to account.
The club stressed its stance in uncompromising terms. Hull reiterated that it operates a zero-tolerance policy on all forms of discrimination and confirmed it has been in contact over the past 24 hours with the Premier League, anti-discrimination organisation Kick It Out, and the relevant social media companies.
No individual should ever experience discriminatory abuse, and the club will provide Robinio with our full support.
Hull also called on their own fanbase to play a part, urging supporters to continue reporting any form of discrimination they witness, online or inside stadiums. The message was not just about one player, but about the standards the club expects around its badge.
Behind the anger and the official language sits a young footballer trying to settle into a new country and a new league. Vaz, who scored once in Serie A last season, arrives with an option to buy included in the deal, a sign that Hull see him as more than a short-term fix.
His first test in England has come not on the pitch, but on a screen.
