In a country that treats football as theatre, Fenerbahce delivered a plot twist even by Turkish standards.
Moments after a 1-1 draw at home to Roma in the Champions League, head coach Ismail Kartal walked into his post‑match press conference and detonated the evening. The 65-year-old announced he was resigning from Fenerbahce “never to return”, saying he was stepping aside “to clear the way for the club”.
The room froze. This was no gentle hint about pressure, no vague reflection on the future. Kartal framed it as a drastic, definitive break.
Then the story spun on its heel.
Within minutes, club president Aziz Yildirim appeared and moved to shut the whole thing down. Kartal, he insisted, was still the coach of Fenerbahce. “He continues in his role,” Yildirim told reporters, cutting through the shock that had rippled out of the press room.
The president pointed to an ugly flashpoint during the game to explain his manager’s dramatic outburst. “Some fans threw a bottle at the coach’s head this evening during the game. He is upset about it,” Yildirim said.
