Jack Payne has spent most of his career living out of a suitcase. Now, on the brink of 100 games for Colchester United, he sounds like a man who has finally found a home.
The 31-year-old will reach his century of appearances for the U’s this weekend, a landmark he has never previously managed at any of his many clubs.
"It's the first time I've actually played 100 games for one club," he said. "It shouldn't have taken this long, but I'm really glad to reach the 100 mark."
For a player who has drifted through dressing rooms up and down the country – Southend United, Huddersfield Town, Lincoln City, Swindon Town, Charlton Athletic, plus loan spells at Oxford United, Blackburn Rovers, Bradford City and MK Dons – that statistic says plenty about what Colchester has come to mean to him.
A late home for a seasoned wanderer
Payne arrived in Essex in 2024 and quickly became the heartbeat of a side fighting for its Football League status. In the 2024-25 season he dragged Colchester through a grim relegation battle, finishing as the club’s player of the season as they clung on to their League Two place.
The wider division took notice. He earned a place in the EFL League Two Team of the Year, underlining his influence in a campaign where the margins were brutally thin.
Across his 99 appearances so far, Payne has delivered 22 goals and 18 assists. Those numbers are not just decoration; they’ve often been the difference between a point and nothing, between anxiety and survival.
"I really enjoy myself here, and I want to make that many more," he said. "This is my third season here, and I've only ever done that once at any other club."
That sense of permanence is new territory. For years he has been the tidy technician passing through, the creative spark borrowed for a season then moved on again.
"I've moved more often than I would have liked over the years for various different reasons," he admitted. "I've felt settled here and hopefully I can be here for many more seasons. The supporters have taken really well to me, and the club really suits me."
Wanted man, staying put
Colchester boss Danny Cowley has already had to fend off interest. He revealed to BBC Essex that the club turned down bids for Payne during the summer window, a clear sign of his value in the current project.
Payne hears the noise, but he is not packing any bags.
"It's nice to hear and I'm obviously doing something right if people from elsewhere are looking to pay money for you," he said. "I'd lie if I said it wasn't flattering to hear about that, but that was never going to happen. I was always going to be here past the window, and hopefully past a few more windows."
In a division where short-term deals and constant churn are the norm, that is a strong statement. Colchester have chosen their playmaker. Their playmaker has chosen them back.
Quiet spell, same belief
This season started with Payne doing what Payne does: threading the key pass. He set up Colchester’s first League goal of the campaign in the 2-2 draw at Accrington, a familiar sight with him drifting into pockets and unlocking defences.
Since then, though, the numbers have stalled. No goals, no assists in the five league games that followed.
He does not sound remotely rattled.
"I never worry about those things as I know as long as I'm available and I'm playing goals and assists will come," he said. "It's just about making sure I'm available, making sure my performances are good and I feel good in myself."
That calm comes from experience. Payne has seen enough seasons to know that form bends and twists, that output can dry up even when performances stay sharp. Colchester will need his conviction as much as his creativity in the months ahead.
The 100th game will arrive this weekend, a personal milestone wrapped inside another League Two slog. For Payne, though, it represents something rarer than a stat line: stability.
He has finally found a club willing to build around him. Now the question is whether he can help build Colchester into the side he believes they can be, not just for this window, but for the many he hopes will follow.
