JJ Gabriel Moves Closer to Barcelona as Manchester United Fights to Retain Prodigy
JJ Gabriel has taken his most decisive step yet away from Manchester United — by flying to Barcelona for talks with the Spanish champions.
The 15-year-old, one of the most highly regarded prospects in United’s academy, is in Catalonia for discussions over a potential move, even as his current club dig in and refuse to release him from his deal.
United’s wonderkid on the brink
This tug of war has been brewing for weeks. Back on August 13, transfer insider Graeme Bailey revealed that United were increasingly worried about their chances of keeping Gabriel at Carrington. Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona had already circled, sensing an opening around a player widely viewed as a top-tier attacking talent.
By September 15, the situation had escalated. Gabriel formally informed United that he wants to leave and, crucially, sent an official notice requesting the immediate cancellation of his academy registration. If that request is ever granted, he would walk away as a free agent — just as he turns 16 next month.
United, though, have him tied to an academy registration that runs until the end of the 2026/27 season. That gives them both leverage and time, and they are showing no inclination to let him walk.
ESPN reported this week that the club have no intention of cancelling the agreement. Sir Jim Ratcliffe has even become personally involved, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that United had been planning talks to persuade Gabriel to reverse his decision.
The club want a future built around him. The player appears to want his future elsewhere.
The Barcelona move gathers pace
On Friday, the story moved from theory to hard evidence. Gabriel was in Barcelona.
Tyrone Marshall, Chief Manchester United Correspondent for the Manchester Evening News, posted on X at 3:19pm on September 18: “JJ Gabriel in Barcelona today for talks over a move to the Nou Camp. United will reject his request to be de-registered but threat of a move on October 6, which would require FIFA approval, remains #mufc.”
Less than half an hour later, Marshall sharpened the picture: “JJ Gabriel closer to Manchester United exit despite club rejecting his request to be de-registered. In Spain and holding talks with Barcelona today. Reports in Spain suggest he will get the EU passport he needs next week #mufc.”
Real Madrid-leaning outlet Marca has also reported Gabriel’s presence in Barcelona, while journalist Ben Jacobs confirmed: “JJ Gabriel is in Barcelona for talks. Barcelona and Real Madrid viewed as the most viable contenders if Gabriel goes abroad.”
The location of these talks matters. Barcelona have made a habit of moving aggressively for elite teenage talent, and the sight of Gabriel in the city sends a message: he is not bluffing.
The clock ticks towards October 6
The key date in all of this is October 6, Gabriel’s 16th birthday.
As Bailey explained, once Gabriel turns 16 he becomes eligible to explore a move to an EU club such as Real Madrid or Barcelona, something that is far more complex under English regulations. His Irish passport is central here, smoothing the path for a switch abroad and making him an even more attractive proposition to La Liga’s giants.
United, though, still hold his academy registration and retain the right to challenge any attempt to cancel it. Any move on or after October 6 would require FIFA approval, and that threat now hangs over Old Trafford.
It leaves the situation finely poised. On one side, a club determined not to lose another prized youngster for nothing, insisting they will reject his de‑registration request. On the other, a teenager already sitting in Barcelona’s orbit, apparently prepared to push his case all the way.
Barcelona and Real Madrid are watching closely, ready to strike if the door opens. United are trying to bolt it shut.
