Joshua Zirkzee’s Manchester United chapter may be heading for a pause, if not a full stop.
Fiorentina are in talks with United over a deal that would see the Dutch forward move to Serie A on an initial loan until the end of the season, with an option to make the transfer permanent next summer. The structure suits all sides: Fiorentina get a closer look at a player with clear upside, United protect value, and Zirkzee gets what he has been missing in England – a regular starting shirt.
The 25-year-old is open to the move. After two seasons of flickering rather than fully igniting at Old Trafford, the chance to reset in Florence holds obvious appeal. Negotiations are ongoing and, while those involved stress an agreement is not yet close, there is growing optimism that the deal can be thrashed out before the 1 September transfer deadline.
United invested £36.5m to bring Zirkzee from Bologna in 2024, fresh from him being named Serie A’s Under-23 player of the season for 2023-24.
He arrived as a forward for the future, but also as one expected to push hard in the present. His debut hinted at exactly that: a composed finish in a 1-0 win over Fulham, a performance that suggested United had found a different kind of No 9, one who could knit attacks together as well as finish them.
The promise never quite hardened into permanence. Across two seasons, Zirkzee has managed just 27 starts in 75 appearances in all competitions. The numbers tell their own story: nine goals, flashes of quality, but no sustained run that forced managers to build the attack around him. Last season underlined the problem. He started only five Premier League games in 2025-26, too often reduced to late cameos and cup outings, a luxury option rather than a locked-in starter.
For a player with three years left on his contract and a reputation still strong across the continent, that is an awkward place to be.
Fiorentina sense an opportunity. They know the league, they know the player from his Bologna days, and they know that a more central role could unlock the version of Zirkzee that once dominated Serie A’s younger age bracket. For United, a loan with an option to buy offers flexibility: if he explodes in Italy, they can either welcome back a more polished forward or cash in at a more favourable moment.
The clock is ticking towards 1 September. Zirkzee’s future, long discussed in the abstract, is now being negotiated in concrete terms. The next move will say plenty about how both clubs – and the player himself – see the peak years of his career unfolding.
