“I understand his point of view, but Atletico Madrid don't want to strengthen a rival and be a feeder club to the teams you can compete domestically with and in the Champions League, so you can understand it from a club point of view as well.
“I'm just glad he didn't go to Arsenal, I'll just leave that one there!”
Those lines cut straight to the heart of the issue. Clubs at the top of European football cannot afford to gift elite forwards to their closest competitors. Atletico protected themselves. Liverpool, watching from afar, quietly celebrated that a potential Arsenal upgrade never arrived.
A decision that keeps the door open to Barcelona
For Álvarez, the outcome is as much about patience as it is about loyalty. Barcelona remain the club he wants to play for. Atletico remain the club that will not sell to them directly.
So he stays put, for now, in Madrid – a key forward at a club that values him, while he waits to see if the political and financial puzzle around Barcelona eventually shifts in his favour.
Arsenal, meanwhile, must attack the season without one of their primary summer targets, knowing exactly how different their frontline might have looked if Álvarez had been willing to trade Spain for north London.
He chose to wait for Barcelona. Arsenal chose to wait for him to change his mind.
