Kellie Harrington is back where she has always looked most at home – on a major international stage with medals on the line and expectation on her shoulders.
The two-time Olympic champion has been named in a 14-strong Ireland squad for the European Elite Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, running from 17-25 September, marking her first appearance at a benchmark event since she retained her lightweight crown in Paris two years ago.
She walked away after those Games. Retired, officially. Then the itch returned.
Harrington eased herself back last December in an exhibition in Dublin, then underlined her enduring class by collecting a 12th national Elite title. She has boxed internationally since, but skipped this year’s World Boxing Cup events in Brazil and China. Sofia will be the real measure – the first major test of a second act.
Heavyweight pedigree across the team
Harrington is far from the only headline name.
The squad is stacked with recent medal winners and world-level operators. Jon McConnell, fresh from Commonwealth Games gold at 70kg, travels as one of Ireland’s form fighters. Michaela Walsh, silver medallist in Glasgow, and Jude Gallagher, who took bronze in July, bring proven tournament nous in the lighter men’s and women’s divisions.
At middleweight, Ireland field one of the most feared names in the sport. Reigning 75kg world champion Aoife O’Rourke anchors the team, joined by her sister Lisa O’Rourke – the 2022 world champion and 2025 silver medallist at 80kg – in a powerful one-two that underlines the country’s depth from 75kg upwards.
Olympic experience runs right through the line-up. Daina Moorehouse, Jenny Lehane, Dean Clancy and Jack Marley all return in green, while 2024 European champion Shannon Sweeney adds further class at 48kg. Cliona D’Arcy, Evelyn Igharo and Gavin Rafferty round out a group that blends hardened operators with boxers eager to break through on the European stage.
“There is huge experience and championship pedigree within this squad, with Olympians, World and European medallists and established Elite champions alongside boxers ready to make their mark on the European stage,” said interim Ireland high performance head coach Damian Kennedy. “That blend of experience, ambition and potential gives us a very strong team.
“The European Championships will be one of the biggest tests our athletes face this year, with an exceptionally high standard expected in Sofia.”
Sharpening the edge before Sofia
Ireland will not go in cold.
Before flying to Bulgaria, the team will host a multi-nations sparring camp, designed to mimic the intensity and variety they will face at the Championships. The camp is open to 33 eligible nations, with World Boxing ranking points at stake once competition begins.
“We're also looking forward to welcoming boxers from Poland, Hungary and Finland for targeted sparring, providing valuable exposure to different international styles,” high performance director Jon Mackey said. “Together, these elements give the team a strong platform as they approach the European Elite Championships.”
For some, Sofia is a chance to confirm status. For others, it is an opening to step out of the shadows.
For Harrington, it is something else again – a return to the sharpest end of the sport, with another chapter still to be written.
