The floodlights were long since dark at Kingspan Breffni when trouble arrived. In the early hours of Friday morning, a fire broke out in the kitchen area of the stadium, forcing Cavan GAA’s county ground out of commission and throwing the weekend’s senior club championship schedule into disarray.
The fire brigade attended the scene shortly after midnight and extinguished the blaze. No one was present at the ground at the time, and there were no injuries – the one clear piece of good news on a grim night for the county’s flagship venue.
The damage, for now, appears confined to the kitchen section of the stadium complex. Assessors spent Friday examining the site, working to establish both the full extent of the destruction and the root cause of the fire. What is already clear is that Kingspan Breffni is currently without water and power, leaving the ground unusable.
Just hours earlier, the stadium had staged Crosserlough’s win over Laragh in the Cavan senior club football championship, another routine night under lights at a ground that has become the heartbeat of the county game. By morning, that routine had been shattered.
Reshuffle of Fixtures
With the venue suddenly out of action, Cavan GAA has been forced into a rapid reshuffle. A busy weekend card of SFC fixtures – Ramor v Ballyhaise, Arva v Cavan Gaels, Cuchlainns v Kingscourt, Castlerahan v Gowna, and Killygarry v Mullahoran – will now be played at alternative grounds.
In a statement, the county board confirmed the shutdown: “Due to a major incident at Kingspan Breffni overnight, the venue is out of commission for the weekend. Thankfully nobody was injured but currently no power or water in the stadium. Further details will be shared once the full extent of the damage has been assessed. Thank you for your understanding.”
For players, managers and supporters, the focus turns to makeshift arrangements and borrowed pitches. For Cavan GAA, the priority is more fundamental: find out what happened, fix the damage, and get their county ground back on its feet before the championship rhythm slips away.
