Lazio have room to move. Two vacant slots sit on their official Serie A squad list, the summer window is shut, and the free-agent market is suddenly more than just a safety net. It is an opportunity – and a potential fault line between the president’s ambition and the coach’s idea of football.
Claudio Lotito’s eye has drifted toward one of the biggest names still unattached: Mauro Icardi. The former Inter striker, fresh from his departure from Galatasaray, is the kind of headline signing that still stirs a president’s imagination. Goals, profile, a proven Serie A pedigree – on paper, it all makes sense.
On the touchline, it feels different.
Gattuso’s vision vs Icardi’s profile
Gennaro Gattuso has been clear about what he wants through the middle: movement, intensity, a striker who can stretch defences and work without the ball as much as with it. That demand shaped Lazio’s late-summer business and delivered Andrea Pinamonti, a forward whose running and work rate fit neatly into the coach’s blueprint.
That is why Icardi, for all his reputation, sits low on Gattuso’s list of priorities. The Argentine is a penalty-box specialist, a finisher who lives between the posts. Gattuso’s system asks for a striker who lives all over the final third. The fit is not obvious.
For now, the coach’s focus is on Pinamonti. Getting him fully match-fit, integrated, and sharp is seen as the real upgrade to Lazio’s attack. Any move for Icardi would be a luxury, not a necessity.
Bissouma enters the frame
The free-agent search is not confined to the front line. Injuries in midfield have opened another avenue, and Yves Bissouma has emerged as a serious consideration.
The former Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton midfielder offers something very different: legs, ball-winning, and Premier League experience. In a squad that has been stretched in the middle of the park, his profile answers a more immediate need than a second centre-forward.
Having already brought in Portuguese defender Diogo Leite on a free, Lazio know how to exploit this market. Patric and Luca Pellegrini have been left off the Serie A list, creating those two precious spaces. The club can afford to be selective.
And that is exactly the stance in Rome.
No rush, just leverage
Despite the names on the table, Lazio are not sprinting toward a decision. The club are prepared to let the situation breathe, to see how the squad copes and how quickly key players return and reach form.
Lotito may be tempted by the idea of Icardi walking back into Serie A in sky blue. Gattuso, though, is guarding the balance of his dressing room and the integrity of his game model. Between them stands the free-agent market, waiting.
