Liverpool's Transfer Window Chaos: Elliott to Valencia, Gakpo Targeted by Man City
Liverpool’s transfer window, already tense and uneven, is threatening to spill into full-blown upheaval.
Harvey Elliott is on the brink of leaving Anfield for Valencia on loan, with Cody Gakpo now firmly in Manchester City’s sights. At a moment when Liverpool look light in key areas, the exits are gathering pace faster than the arrivals.
Elliott pushes for Spain as Valencia close in
Harvey Elliott’s Liverpool career has stalled. After an underwhelming loan at Aston Villa last season, the midfielder has slipped down the pecking order under Andoni Iraola and is now pushing for a fresh start.
Valencia have sensed an opportunity.
Journalist Matteo Moretto first revealed that the La Liga club were closing in on Elliott, reporting “optimism between the parties” and stating that negotiations between the clubs were “very advanced” for a loan deal. Elliott, crucially, has already spoken directly with Iraola and asked to join Valencia, underlining his desire to move.
The pressure on Liverpool’s squad has not stopped the deal from accelerating. Fabrizio Romano has now backed up those claims, stating that Elliott has agreed personal terms with Valencia after positive talks. Club-to-club negotiations are ongoing, but the direction of travel is clear: Elliott wants Spain, and Valencia want Elliott.
Romano also noted that Valencia made an official approach and that Elliott had three proposals on the table, with the Spanish side pushing hardest to beat the competition. For a player once tipped as a long-term creative hub at Anfield, the outcome looks very different: a late-window loan, a new league, and a battle to relaunch his career away from the Premier League spotlight.
Barcola in, but gaps remain
Liverpool’s window was never going to be quiet, yet it has veered into something more chaotic than planned. The long pursuit of Bradley Barcola has finally paid off, with the PSG winger set to join for £100m plus add-ons. He will become the club’s fourth summer signing after Ronald Araujo, Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz.
On paper, that sounds like a serious rebuild. In reality, Iraola is still working with a thin group and a fixture list that will not wait for the recruitment department to catch up.
Liverpool still look short of another forward, a midfielder and potentially a right-back. The exits are not helping. Elliott is heading for the door. More departures are expected before the window closes. For a coach trying to stamp his identity on a new team, the sense of being left exposed is hard to ignore.
Man City move in on Gakpo
Just as Liverpool brace for Elliott’s departure, another key name has been dragged into the late-window storm.
Cody Gakpo is now Manchester City’s “top target”, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke, with the champions pushing to agree a deal after allowing Savinho and Omar Marmoush to join Tottenham. City are short in attacking areas and have turned to a player long linked with Spurs.
O’Rourke admits the move would raise eyebrows, describing it as a “surprise” that City are actively considering a bid for Gakpo. Tottenham have shown the most concrete interest in the Dutchman this summer, but City’s need for attacking reinforcements has changed the landscape. When City move, they usually move with intent.
For Liverpool, the timing could hardly be worse. Barcola’s arrival strengthens one flank, but losing Gakpo would rip another option out of Iraola’s front line just as the season beds in. The Dutchman may not have hit his absolute ceiling at Anfield yet, but he remains a versatile, high-level attacker in a squad already accused of being too thin.
The window is ticking down. Liverpool are trying to build, trying to refresh, trying to compete. Yet as Valencia close in on Elliott and City circle Gakpo, the question hangs over Anfield: are they quietly constructing a contender, or sleepwalking into a season defined by what – and who – they let go?
