“From the first day I saw something different in him, first as a player, because of his talent, but also because of his personality,” Modric continued. “He can be a leader. The people at the Bernabeu appreciate that he gives his all on the pitch, he leaves everything on the field. They value not only his talent, but also his work ethic. What he did at the World Cup and how he started this year is incredible; I hope he keeps it up.”
That word – leader – is not thrown around lightly in Madrid’s midfield. It is a position defined by giants: from Fernando Redondo to Zinedine Zidane, from Xabi Alonso to Modric himself. To hear the Croatian speak, Bellingham is not just another promising talent dropped into that lineage. He is being invited into it.

All of this unfolds as Mourinho reshapes Madrid in his own image once more. The demands have shifted: work rate, defensive sacrifice, collective effort. In that environment, Bellingham’s relentlessness becomes more than a luxury. It becomes a necessity.
His rise since arriving from the Bundesliga has already bordered on the outrageous. Goals, assists, late winners, big-game performances – he has delivered them all. Yet the detail Modric keeps returning to is not the numbers. It is the attitude. The “warrior” edge that has turned him into a crowd favourite almost overnight.
