Manchester United have rebuilt the heart of their team this summer. The flanks, though, still tell a different story.
Around £150m has gone into reshaping the midfield with Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans arriving to drag the engine room into a new era. Yet as the window ticks into its final days, one of the most basic structural needs remains unresolved: a dependable left-back.
Luke Shaw’s quality has never been in doubt. His availability has. United know they cannot build a season on the hope that his body suddenly holds up. Lewis Hall, widely viewed as their preferred solution, looked like the ideal long-term answer. But Newcastle United have made it clear that a move is not on the table this summer, even with the player open to the idea.
That slammed door has forced United back into the market, and one name keeps circling the conversation: David Raum.
Raum on the radar – but United hesitate
The 28-year-old RB Leipzig defender sits firmly on United’s left-back shortlist, according to German outlet BILD, relayed by Sport Witness. He is not a speculative link. He is a live option.
Raum brings end product. Ten goal involvements in the Bundesliga last season underline his threat in the final third, and his delivery from wide areas would give United a different angle in attack. He is also walking into the final year of his contract, a detail that usually tilts the balance in favour of the buying club.
Leipzig, though, have set their stall out. They ideally want around €40m for the Germany international. Privately, they accept that the contract situation may drag that figure down, but they still expect a significant fee.
This is where United stall.
Reports in Germany describe the club as “dithering” over whether to commit a “relatively large sum” to a player who turns 29 this season. The debate is simple: do they spend big on a ready-made option, or pivot towards a younger full-back with more resale value and room to grow?
For a club that has already pushed its budget on midfield reinforcements, every decision now carries weight.
Raum opens the door
Raum himself has not tried to hide the reality of his situation. Speaking this week, he acknowledged that interest is arriving.
“I’m now heading into the final year of my contract,” he said. “I don’t need to lie about the fact that inquiries are coming in – that’s obviously to be expected. But as things stand, I’m looking forward to the season with Leipzig.”
It is a classic player’s stance in late August. Door ajar. Commitment to the present, but no denial of what might come next. Leipzig know it. So do United.
The question is whether Old Trafford chooses to walk through that door or look elsewhere.
Romano: United want a “guarantee” at left-back
What is not in doubt is the urgency. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has been clear: United are still actively working on a left-back before the deadline and expect movement in the final days.
“I think it could be busy for Man Utd in this final four or five days of the window because I can guarantee to you that Manchester United are still looking for a solution at left-back,” he said on his YouTube channel. “So Man Utd are working to sign a new left-back.”
The profile they want is telling. Not a marquee, fantasy signing. A reliable one.
“I would not be surprised if they end up with a solution for a player who can be almost a guarantee,” Romano explained. He pointed to Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde as an example of the type of elite talent United had considered, but quickly stepped away from. “They had a call with Jorge Mendes one week ago, but the deal is too expensive. Transfer fee, salary, too expensive. United are not going to do that, at least for now.”
Instead, Romano likened the likely move to the Sergio Reguilon loan from Tottenham – an experienced, international full-back brought in to stabilise a problem position rather than headline a window.
“Obviously I’m not saying Reguilon,” he clarified, “but that kind of player, experienced left-back who can provide competition, who can also be an international profile. So Manchester United are exploring this kind of options. So left-back is expected to be an area where Man Utd want to improve before the deadline. I expect them to sign there.”
A decision United cannot delay
That leaves United at a familiar crossroads: pay a premium for a near-finished article like Raum, or hunt for a cheaper, perhaps younger alternative and hope the gamble pays off.
Raum offers certainty in some areas – proven output in a top league, international pedigree, immediate readiness. His age and price, though, sit awkwardly against a club trying to be more disciplined in the market.
What United cannot afford is paralysis. The season will not wait for a perfect deal. Shaw’s fitness record will not magically rewrite itself. The margin for error at the top of the Premier League is shrinking, and everyone at Old Trafford knows it.
In the final days of this window, the left-back they choose – or fail to choose – will say a lot about what kind of club Manchester United want to be this season.
