Manchester United went looking for a late solution at left-back. Aston Villa slammed the door.
Over the weekend, United sounded out Villa over Ian Maatsen, testing whether there was any room to manoeuvre for a player who has quickly become central to Unai Emery’s plans. The answer has now arrived, loud and clear.
There will be no deal.
United search, Villa stand firm
United’s need is obvious. With the summer window ticking towards its deadline, the club want a new left-back in before the shutters come down, and are also braced for a possible change in attack if Joshua Zirkzee moves on.
Zirkzee has already turned down Fiorentina, but Juventus are circling. The Serie A side have proposed a €2.5m loan with an option to buy at the end of the season for €30m, a structure that would give United a decision to make on their forward line.
At left-back, though, they have room to act now without first forcing an exit. That is why Maatsen’s name moved quickly up the list.
Journalist Pete O’Rourke revealed that United had made an enquiry for the Aston Villa defender, a clear sign the club were ready to test Villa’s resolve. It did not take long for the response from Birmingham to filter out.
Sky Sports reporter Danyal Khan indicated Villa’s stance: Maatsen is not for sale. Instead of entertaining offers, Villa intend to reward the 24-year-old with a new contract. A player United viewed as a possible solution is seen by Villa as part of the foundation.
Khan detailed that United had “explored potential availability” but that Villa “do not want to sell” and are preparing new terms. United, he added, remain active in the left-back market, ready to strike if the right opportunity appears before Tuesday’s deadline, all while trying to balance short-term needs with longer-term targets.
Romano: “Decision made”
By Monday lunchtime, any lingering doubt disappeared.
Fabrizio Romano, who had already confirmed United’s interest, delivered the definitive update. Villa, he reported, consider Maatsen “a key player; untouchable and he will not be sold this summer.” United were among the clubs to ask the question, but the answer from Villa is final. “Decision made.”
For a club trying to rebuild with a clearer recruitment plan, United now have to pivot again.
Alejandro Balde is another name that has drifted around Old Trafford’s rumour mill, but that trail is cold as well. The 22-year-old wants to stay at Barcelona, and there is no realistic expectation inside United that this will change before the window closes.
Short-term gap, long-term plan
So where does that leave them? Possibly, with no new left-back at all in the next 36 hours.
The longer view at Old Trafford points towards Lewis Hall. Ben Jacobs has reported that United believe they have the player’s “buy in” for a move, with a deal potentially there to be done in the summer of 2027. Hall, currently at Newcastle, is being treated as a long-term solution rather than a late-window scramble.
That creates a tension at the heart of United’s planning. The squad needs reinforcement now. The recruitment department, though, is wary of blocking future moves by spending big or compromising on profile in a rush.
If the right player does not shake loose before the deadline, United may simply choose to live with that tension, ride out the season with what they have on the left, and wait for Hall.
They asked the Maatsen question. Villa’s answer has forced them to think even harder about whether the next left-back through the door should be a quick fix or a cornerstone.
