Mikel Arteta is staying at Arsenal – and on significantly improved terms.
The Premier League champions have reached a final agreement with their manager on a new contract, ending months of negotiations and removing any lingering doubt over his future beyond this season. His current deal was due to expire at the end of the campaign, but the club hierarchy has now moved decisively to lock in the architect of their resurgence.
The exact length of the new contract has not been disclosed, yet it is expected to carry Arteta into at least his 10th year at the club. He first walked back through the doors at Arsenal in December 2019, inheriting a drifting side and a fractured mood. Four-and-a-half years on, he has turned them into champions of England and restored an identity the fanbase had been craving.
The new agreement reflects that transformation in hard numbers as well as symbolism. Arteta’s salary will rise sharply from his current £10m per year, with a further £5m available in bonuses. It is elite-manager money for a coach now firmly viewed as central to the club’s long-term project.
Talks had been progressing for several months, with BBC Sport reporting earlier this month that a breakthrough was close. The final details have now been settled, aligning club and manager at a moment when stability at the top feels as valuable as any big-name signing.
Arteta himself has never sounded like a man with one eye on the exit. Asked about the negotiations last week, he moved quickly to reassure supporters: “They [the fans] don't have to worry about any of that because I want to be here. I'm extremely happy and I feel very grateful to work with the people I work with.”
For Arsenal, that sentiment now comes backed by a major new contract and a clear statement: the manager who led them back to the summit will be the one trusted to keep them there.
