MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota returns to Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on Sunday with momentum, a statement win in its pocket, and a goalkeeper playing some of the best soccer in the Big Ten.
The Golden Gophers host Northwestern at 1 p.m. CT, live on B1G+, as both teams look to climb early in the conference table. Both sides sit at 1-1-0 in league play, but they arrive there by very different paths.
Gophers riding home form and a hot goalkeeper
Minnesota’s Big Ten opening weekend told two very different stories, both with Sarah Martin at the center.
On Sept. 10, the Gophers stunned No. 25 Iowa 1-0, their first win over a ranked opponent since they toppled No. 14 South Carolina in the NCAA Tournament back on Nov. 22, 2024. Forward Tenley Senden delivered the decisive moment, smashing home an unassisted strike in the 41st minute. Martin did the rest, sealing the upset with six saves and a composed command of her penalty area.
Three days later at Penn State, the senior goalkeeper absorbed another barrage. The Nittany Lions fired 18 shots; only one found a way past her. Martin finished the weekend with 13 saves across the two matches and a single goal conceded from a combined 40 shots faced.
That body of work earned her Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week honors, the second such award of her career after first claiming it on Oct. 14, 2025. It also pushed her deeper into the Minnesota record book. Martin now sits eighth all-time in career goalkeeper minutes with 4,221:36, moving past Lindsey Dare, and she has climbed to sixth in program history in goals-against average at 1.13, edging ahead of Maddie Nielsen.
Her broader résumé is just as steady: 47 consecutive starts, 25 wins, 14 shutouts, 167 saves, and a 76.3% save percentage. She is the anchor around which this Minnesota team has been built.
That foundation has been nearly flawless at home. The Gophers are undefeated at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium this season, posting a 4-0-1 record across five matches. Any visiting team has to contend not only with Minnesota’s energy in its own building, but also with a side that has learned how to tilt the field.
Attack by committee
Minnesota’s 5-2-1 overall record rests on more than just defensive resolve. The Gophers are outshooting opponents 130–80, averaging 16.25 attempts per game while allowing only 10. They are not leaning on a single star to carry the scoring load, either.

The goals are spread across the roster, a difficult puzzle for opposing back lines to solve.
Behind them sits a creative engine room that keeps the ball moving and chances flowing. Ten players have recorded at least one assist this season. Against Colorado College on Sept. 6, that playmaking hit a historic note as Minnesota racked up seven assists in a single match, something the program had not done since a 5-0 win over Utah State in 2017.
At the heart of that distribution is transfer midfielder Hailee Christensen. She has stepped straight into the side and become Minnesota’s top facilitator, leading the team with three assists while appearing in all eight games. Her touch and vision have given the Gophers an extra layer of control in the attacking third.
Northwestern threat
Northwestern arrives in Minneapolis with its own split start to conference play. The Wildcats opened by grinding out a 1-0 win over Michigan, banking an important three points to start their Big Ten campaign.
The next outing was less forgiving. No. 14 Wisconsin punished Northwestern on set pieces, scoring twice from dead-ball situations in a 2-0 defeat. That detail will not be lost on Minnesota, which has been sharp on both ends of restarts and will see an opportunity to test the Wildcats’ organization.
Northwestern’s record sits at 3-4-2 overall, but this is a program accustomed to tight, physical Big Ten matches. The Wildcats will not be intimidated by Minnesota’s home form, nor by the Gophers’ shot totals.
Stage set at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium
Sunday’s meeting carries the feel of an early-season measuring stick. Minnesota, 5-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the Big Ten, has already shown it can topple a ranked opponent and suffocate games at home. Northwestern, 3-4-2 and also 1-1-0 in conference play, is searching for consistency and a foothold in the league race.
