Middlesbrough’s top scorer has gone west. Morgan Whittaker has left the Riverside to join MLS side Colorado Rapids, ending a turbulent yet ultimately productive spell on Teesside.
The 25-year-old forward has signed a three-year deal in Denver, with the Rapids holding an option for a further year. He will occupy one of their coveted Designated Player slots, a clear sign of how highly the Western Conference club rate him as they chase a play-off push under English head coach Matt Wells. Colorado currently sit seventh in the West.
Whittaker's Time at Middlesbrough
For Boro, it draws a line under a short, intense chapter.
Signed from Plymouth Argyle for £5m in January 2025, Whittaker arrived as a statement winter addition. Middlesbrough had beaten off strong competition to land him midway through the 2024-25 campaign, but the early returns were brutal. He failed to score in any of his first 16 appearances as Michael Carrick’s side slid out of play-off contention on the final day.
The drought grew heavier with every game. At Preston North End it boiled over, with Whittaker actually cheered off when he was substituted, a jarring moment that underlined just how far confidence had fallen.
Then the dam broke.
Whittaker finally “broke his duck” in a win over Ipswich Town and his season flipped on its head. He hit eight goals in 12 games, including a streak of scoring in six consecutive matches, and finished the campaign as Boro’s leading marksman. The late surge was not enough to drag Middlesbrough into the Premier League, their promotion hopes ultimately crushed in the play-offs, but it restored his reputation as a decisive forward.
New Season and Departure
That form carried him into the new season as a central figure. Whittaker featured in five matches for Boro this term, starting all three Championship fixtures up to the victory over West Bromwich Albion on 29 August. Yet as the club reshaped its squad with a flurry of arrivals, the landscape shifted.
Middlesbrough have brought in 12 new players this summer, including Brighton winger Amario Cozier-Duberry on loan in a deadline-day move. With fresh attacking options and an offer from the United States on the table, Boro chose to cash in. The fee for Whittaker’s move to Colorado remains undisclosed.
In total, he leaves with 14 goals from 66 appearances in a Middlesbrough shirt, a record that looks very different when viewed through the lens of that long barren run and the explosive finish that followed.
For Whittaker, it is a bold reset: a Designated Player role, a new league, a new country, and the expectation to be a match-winner in Denver. For Boro, it is another significant step in a summer of overhaul, and a reminder that even a top scorer can be moved on when the rebuild gathers pace.
