Arsenal and Chelsea arrive at the Emirates on Sunday with perfect records, goals flowing and optimism flooding both ends of London. Gary Neville thinks only one of them walks away still looking flawless.
He’s nailed his colours firmly to the champions.
Neville has predicted a 2-0 Arsenal win in the first major London derby of the season, arguing that Mikel Arteta’s side have the structure and steel to blunt Xabi Alonso’s thrilling, but still imperfect, Chelsea.
Champions vs upstarts
Arsenal’s title defence has begun with the calm assurance of a team that knows exactly who it is. A routine 3-0 dismantling of newly-promoted Coventry City set the tone, followed by a more grinding 1-0 victory over Aston Villa, sealed by Bukayo Saka’s decisive strike.
Chelsea’s opening, by contrast, has been chaos of the entertaining kind. A 3-2 win over Fulham, then a wild 4-3 edge-of-the-seat victory against Brighton. Alonso’s side have burst out of the blocks as early title contenders, full of attacking verve and risk.
Neville admires that front-foot approach, but he doesn’t trust it yet against the most ruthless team in the division.
He believes Chelsea’s forwards will trouble Arsenal. He just doesn’t believe they’ll break them.
Organisation vs excitement
Speaking on a Sky Sports podcast, Neville drew a clear tactical line between Chelsea and Arsenal’s previous opponents.
"I think Arsenal will realise Chelsea have better attacking players than Aston Villa so they’ll have to be alert and alive," he said. Villa, in his view, are the benchmark for defensive organisation in the league – apart from Arsenal themselves.
"I think Villa are the most organised team in the league except for Arsenal, I think they’re really well organised and so well drilled by Unai Emery. Chelsea aren’t as well organised as that and they aren’t as disciplined."
That’s the crack he sees in Alonso’s early blueprint. Chelsea’s open, expansive style has been exhilarating, but it has also left gaps. Fulham and Brighton both found them. Neville expects Arsenal to be far more ruthless when those spaces appear.
The pressure, he suspects, will eventually tell.
Chelsea’s revival meets its first real examination
Chelsea’s resurgence under Alonso has been one of the early stories of the season. From last year’s disappointing 10th-place finish to a side suddenly being spoken about as genuine challengers again, the mood around Stamford Bridge has flipped.
They have already shown character, twice edging goal-laden contests by a single strike. A 3-2 against Fulham. A 4-3 against Brighton. High risk, high reward.
Neville doesn’t dismiss that progress. He frames this fixture as the moment we find out how real it is.
"They’ve been so exciting in their first two games," he said, "but this is the ultimate test for them against the champions who don’t make a lot of mistakes."
That, for him, is the heart of it: Arsenal rarely give you much. Chelsea, right now, give you plenty – at both ends.
Arsenal’s chance to bite back
Neville expects Arsenal not just to withstand Chelsea, but to relish what Alonso’s side bring.
"They won’t defend in the same way as Villa so I think Arsenal may actually fancy their chances going forward more against Chelsea," he explained. The champions, in his view, will sense opportunity every time Chelsea commit bodies forward.
At the same time, he warned, Arsenal cannot switch off against a front line packed with "fantastic attacking players". That tension – Arsenal’s control against Chelsea’s chaos – is what he believes will define the afternoon.
"I think Arsenal will win the game," Neville added, calling it "a really good test for them and a really good moment to see Chelsea in the early days of Xabi Alonso."
He has gone further than most. Neville has already tipped Arsenal and Chelsea to finish first and second in the table this season, which gives Sunday’s clash a sharper edge. This isn’t just another early-season derby. It’s an opening statement in a race he expects them both to contest until the end.
A scoreline and a warning

"We’ll go 2-0 to Arsenal. I think Arsenal are going to be so up for it and strong, they are going to be really aggressive."
Aggression, control, discipline against a side still learning how to balance freedom with responsibility. That’s the battle line he’s drawn.
If Alonso’s Chelsea can tear up that script at the Emirates, the conversation around the title race changes overnight. If they can’t, Neville’s view hardens into something else: a reminder that playing the champions is very different from just looking like one.
