Newcastle United’s recruitment drive is already moving towards January, and this time the brief looks slightly different. After a summer spent almost exclusively on younger prospects with long-term upside, the club is now circling a winger who is a little further along in his development – Sporting CP’s Geny Catamo.
The 25-year-old Mozambique international has pushed his way onto several Premier League shortlists, with Newcastle among the clubs stepping up their scouting in recent weeks. According to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, the Magpies have joined Brentford, Nottingham Forest, Brighton and Aston Villa in taking a close look at the right-sided attacker.
Catamo is making that attention feel justified. He has started the season sharply for Sporting, producing two goals and three assists in his first seven appearances. Those numbers, allied to his direct running and versatility across the front line, have turned what was once quiet interest into something more focused.
Newcastle are not arriving late to this story. Bailey reports that a number of clubs made contact with Catamo’s camp earlier in the summer and have kept tabs on his progress since. The real problem sits elsewhere – inside Sporting’s boardroom.
The Portuguese club showed in the last window that they are in no mood to bargain. Sunderland made Catamo their primary attacking target but never got close to a deal. Sporting pointed straight at the winger’s €60 million (£51 million) release clause and refused to budge. Sunderland walked away rather than smash their budget on a single player.
The Black Cats, though, have not abandoned the idea. They remain keen, even as the landscape around Catamo changes. With Newcastle, Brentford, Forest, Brighton and Villa now firmly in the mix, the chase has shifted from a Championship gamble to a multi-club Premier League battle.
One element tilts slightly towards the English sides. Bailey reports that Catamo is “more than open” to a move to the Premier League and is attracted by the chance to test himself in England. That mindset matters. A player eager to cross the channel can sometimes apply pressure of his own when negotiations stall.
For now, there is no sign that Newcastle have gone beyond scouting. No offer, no formal talks, no indication yet that Sporting are ready to soften their stance. The €60 million figure still looms over everything, a price tag that instantly turns curiosity into a serious financial decision.
So the question hangs in the air at St James’ Park and beyond: is Geny Catamo a £51 million swing worth taking, or does that kind of fee push Newcastle – and their Premier League rivals – to look elsewhere when January opens?
