Newcastle United’s midfield rebuild is gathering pace, and it may not stop with Nico Gonzalez.
With the Manchester City man lined up as the headline addition in the middle of the park, the recruitment team at St James’ Park is still combing the market ahead of the Sept. 1 deadline. The departures have forced their hand. Matthias Jaissle has already lost Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali this summer, while Joe Willock could yet follow, with Besiktas circling.
That kind of turnover rips the heart out of any engine room. Newcastle have been working through a list of potential solutions. Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall has been among the names under discussion. Now another Spurs midfielder has moved back into focus.
Newcastle revive interest in Spurs’ Archie Gray
According to the Daily Mail, via DeadlineDaylive, Newcastle have renewed their interest in Archie Gray, the 20-year-old Tottenham midfielder whose appeal goes far beyond a single role on the pitch.
Gray arrived at Spurs from Leeds United in a £40 million (€46 million) deal and has already racked up 81 appearances. He has been used in central midfield, at centre back and at right back, a level of versatility that makes him particularly attractive to a Newcastle side trying to stretch its budget across several needs.
For all that flexibility, Gray is viewed primarily as a midfielder. That is where his long-term future lies, and where Newcastle would see him as part of a new core if they could ever prise him away.
That is the problem.
Price tag and Tottenham stance
Gray’s market value is estimated at around €35 million, but Tottenham are under no pressure to accept that kind of figure. The report states that Spurs value him at more than £60 million (€69 million) and consider him firmly within Roberto De Zerbi’s plans.
Spurs have already spent heavily this summer — €267 million and counting — and will need sales to balance the books. There are players they would listen to offers for. Gray, though, is not on that list of preferred departures.
His status at the club has only grown in recent months. Over the summer he captained Tottenham in preseason, then wore the armband again in their Premier League opener against Brentford. Those are not the decisions of a club preparing to cash in.
Yet his role is still evolving. Despite the responsibility of the captain’s armband, the England Under-21 international has not consistently locked down a starting spot in his favoured midfield position. He has been the solution to several problems rather than the undisputed first name in one area.
Newcastle’s dilemma
That is where the intrigue lies for Newcastle. They admire a player who can cover multiple roles in a squad that has been stripped of key midfielders. They also know any move would demand a huge outlay for a footballer Tottenham see as central to their project.
With Gonzalez now emerging as Newcastle’s immediate midfield priority, there is no desperation to force the issue. The club do not need to rush into a bid for Gray or pay over the odds simply to make another statement signing.
So the question hangs over the final days of the window. Is Archie Gray the kind of £60 million-plus gamble Newcastle should make to complete their rebuild, or does the smarter play lie in spreading that money across other areas once the Gonzalez deal is done?
