Neymar left Vila Belmiro limping, furious and with more than just Palmeiras on his mind.
Santos had already done most of the damage in the first leg of their Copa do Brasil quarter-final, a 3-0 defeat that left them with a mountain to climb. The second leg at home ended goalless, sealing their exit. By half-time, their Brazilian star was off with a thigh problem and seething at what he believed was a second opponent: the pitch.
He did not hold back.
On Instagram, Neymar opened with a cold slice of sarcasm: “I would like to congratulate the person responsible for the Vila Belmiro stadium pitch.” Then the gloves came off.
“What happened yesterday was the worst pitch the club has ever seen,” he wrote. “It was full of holes because of works carried out one day before the match. Unbelievable! Alongside playing against the opponent, we were also playing against the pitch.”
The forward’s anger went beyond aesthetics. He linked the surface directly to the physical toll on Santos’ players.
“And to make matters worse, we had to make a greater effort because of its dreadful condition. No wonder 3 players were injured in the first half. Well done indeed... very poor work!”
Neymar had limped off at the end of the first half, clearly uncomfortable. The initial diagnosis was vague, and he chose his words carefully when addressing his own situation.
“Unfortunately, I felt discomfort in my thigh. I will undergo tests, and I hope it is not serious. We will keep our morale up and focus on what is coming.”
So the night ended with Santos out of the cup, their star in the treatment room, and the historic Vila Belmiro pitch under fire from one of the club’s greatest modern icons.
Palmeiras, though, were not about to let the criticism pass.
The São Paulo giants responded with a pointed, sarcastic statement of their own, turning Neymar’s complaints into an opportunity to showcase their standards. They praised the condition of their own pitch, stressing that it receives daily maintenance and “remains in perfect condition,” a clear counterpoint to the chaos described at Vila Belmiro.
Palmeiras went a step further, saying their players feel more secure thanks to that quality and highlighting a statistic that cut straight to the heart of Neymar’s argument: according to the club, they are the Brazilian top-flight side least affected by injuries over the past five years.
It was a sharp, calculated reply. Neymar had aimed at the ground. Palmeiras turned the spotlight on theirs.
Now the scans on that thigh will tell their own story. For Santos and their number 10, the question is simple: was this just one bad night on a bad surface, or a warning sign in a season that cannot afford many more setbacks?
