Patrick Vieira moved quickly to end the speculation. Sadio Mané is out of his first Senegal squad, but not out of his plans.
The new head coach confirmed that the Al-Nassr forward has been omitted for physical reasons, not because of any rupture with the national team or doubts over his international future.
Vieira sprang a surprise when he unveiled his first list for the opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Mozambique and Ethiopia without the country’s biggest star. In Senegal, that kind of absence always sets the rumour mill spinning.
So he addressed it head-on.
“I spoke with Sadio by phone, and he is suffering from a physical problem, which is why he will not be with us in this camp, but he will probably be present in the next camp,” Vieira said at his introductory press conference, as reported by Senegalese outlet Seneweb.
One call, a clear explanation, and a reassurance: Mané remains very much part of the “Lions de la Teranga” story.
A job taken with the heart, not the wallet
Vieira also wanted to clear up another subject before a ball has even been kicked: money.
The former Arsenal and France midfielder insisted his decision to take the Senegal job was not driven by finances.
“My choice was a decision that came from the heart, and not for the money,” he said, cutting off any suggestion that this was a lucrative stopover rather than a genuine football project.
The conviction came quickly. According to Vieira, it took just one meeting with the Senegalese Football Federation president for him to commit.
“From the very first meeting that brought me together with the federation president, I immediately agreed to take on this challenge,” he explained. No long courtship, no drawn-out negotiations. The project sold itself.
Backing an exceptional generation
What persuaded him? The players.
Vieira sees a wave coming through Senegalese football and wants to be on the touchline when it crests. He spoke of “an exceptional generation of players on the verge of emerging” and a “real opportunity” to put his elite experience at their disposal.
This is the hook for him: a squad with proven stars and hungry talents, and a chance to shape what comes next.
His stated ambition is straightforward but weighty. He wants to use everything he learned at the top level to build a new project with Senegal, working hand in hand with the federation and the group he has inherited.
The first list did not include Sadio Mané. The next one probably will. And that is when the real measure of Vieira’s Senegal will begin to take shape.
