The fault lines inside the Austrian Football Association have finally cracked open. On Friday, a meeting of the ÖFB supervisory body is expected to decide what many in Vienna now see as inevitable: the end of Peter Schöttel’s nine-year run at the top of Austrian football.
This is not a routine change of guard. It is a divorce.
Relationship “Beyond Repair”
Reports from Austrian outlets Kurier and Krone paint a clear picture: the relationship between sporting director Peter Schöttel and national team coach Ralf Rangnick is regarded as broken beyond repair. The federation has already pushed Schöttel to the sidelines, a move that underlines how far the balance of power has shifted towards the German coach.
Marc Janko, former Austria international and now a Sky pundit, did little to soften the blow. “If you ask around behind the scenes, then it is not hugely surprising,” he said, confirming what many within the ÖFB have whispered for months.
Janko spelled out the core of the problem. With Schöttel and Rangnick, “it did not really work properly,” he admitted. Over time, Rangnick stopped routing key decisions through the sporting director. “It is indeed the case that for some time Rangnick, in all the matters that are important to him, has not been doing that via Peter, but via other people.”
In other words: the sporting director still had the title, but not the influence.
End of a Successful Chapter
Schöttel’s likely exit would close a remarkably successful chapter for the ÖFB. The 59-year-old arrived in 2017, first as U19 coach. Within two months, he was elevated to overall sporting director, entrusted with shaping the long-term direction of Austrian football.
Results followed.
Under his watch, Austria qualified for the European Championship twice in succession. At both Euro 2021 and Euro 2024, the national team reached the last 16, a level of consistency the country had long craved.
The high point came last summer. Austria reached a World Cup finals for the first time in 28 years, a landmark moment for the federation. Their run ended in the round of 32 against eventual world champions Spain, but the breakthrough itself stood as the defining achievement of Schöttel’s tenure.
Now that era is poised to end not with a farewell tour, but with a boardroom decision driven by a clash of personalities and philosophies.
Prödl Emerges as the Favourite
The ÖFB has not yet made an official call on Schöttel’s successor. Still, the outlines of the future are already forming.
According to Krone, an internal favourite has emerged: Sebastian Prödl.
The former Werder Bremen defender has been leading the ÖFB’s youth department since 2024 and is held in high regard within the association. His work with the next generation has impressed the hierarchy, but one factor stands above all the others.
Prödl is said to enjoy an “exceptionally good” relationship with Ralf Rangnick.
In a structure where the bond between coach and sporting director has just imploded, that detail is not incidental. It is central. Austria’s recent success has given the federation a platform it has not enjoyed for decades, yet the current power struggle shows how fragile that platform can be.
If Friday brings the expected decision, the ÖFB will move from the Schöttel era into the Prödl-Rangnick axis. The question now is simple: can harmony at the top keep Austria’s golden run on track, or will this rupture leave scars that linger far beyond one man’s departure?
