Arsenal have circled, Bayern Munich have watched, and Europe’s scouts have taken notes. For now, though, Rio Ngumoha is staying exactly where Liverpool always expected him to be: on their books and on their left flank.
The Premier League champions have spent the early months of the 2027 season hunting for a new winger after failing to land Morgan Rogers or Vinicius Junior in the summer window. Gabriel Martinelli departed and no direct replacement arrived, leaving a gap on the depth chart and a swirl of rumours about who might eventually fill it.
Ngumoha’s name shot straight to the top of that list. An 18-year-old left-sided livewire with the confidence to demand the ball and the composure to do something with it, he fits the profile Arsenal crave. The London club’s need is obvious; their intent, real. But Liverpool have never treated this as a negotiation.
As Fabrizio Romano put it, Liverpool’s stance through months of speculation around Bayern and others “was always the same: the player is not leaving, the player is not for sale and Liverpool trust Rio. Rio is Liverpool’s future.”
That conviction is now hardening into contract ink.
Liverpool move to lock down their next star
TEAMtalk reported earlier this month that Liverpool and Ngumoha’s camp had reached an agreement in principle on a lucrative new deal. The structure is there, the broad numbers are there, and the pathway has been laid out. What remains is the formal step: turning that handshake understanding into a signed, binding contract.
According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Liverpool do not expect that final stretch to be complicated. The club are “desperate to keep hold of Ngumoha,” he explained, and crucially, the teenager is understood to be happy on Merseyside and “set to get regular starts this season.”
That last point matters. Young wingers do not just stay for the badge; they stay for minutes. Liverpool have sold him a route into the first team and, by all accounts, he has bought into it. The club believe his long-term future lies at Anfield, and there is optimism on both sides that the deal will be completed.
The pressure from outside has not gone away. It has simply been swatted aside.
Arsenal watch from the outside
As the summer window closed without a marquee left-wing signing, Arsenal’s interest in Ngumoha only grew louder. Martinelli left, Leandro Trossard was replaced by Christos Tzolis, and still there was a sense that something was missing in Mikel Arteta’s attacking armoury.
That vacuum helped fuel the latest round of stories. Romano spelt out the logic: Arsenal did not bring in a like-for-like Martinelli successor, so “Arsenal always look at opportunities.” Ngumoha, one of the standout talents in his position, naturally sits on their long-term radar.
And it will not just be Arsenal. Romano expects “strong interest” in the winger in the coming years, from England and abroad, and made it clear that if a chance arises to sign him in 2027, 2028 or beyond, Arsenal would be among the clubs ready to move.
But that is the future. Right now, Liverpool are not entertaining exits. There has been “not even a discussion or a negotiation” over a sale, Romano said. The club’s focus is narrow: secure the contract, provide the guarantees the player wants, and find the right balance on every detail.
Liverpool’s bet on the pathway
This is not simply about money. Liverpool are selling Ngumoha a project. Regular starts. A clear role. A dressing room where he is not a prospect on the fringes but a central piece of the next cycle.
Talks are ongoing over the final terms, and both sides still need to sign off on every clause. But all the signals point the same way: Liverpool expect to keep their man, and Arsenal look destined to chalk up another near miss in their search for a long-term solution on the left.
The chase for Ngumoha may resume in a year or two, when contracts are older and squads have shifted again. For now, though, the message from Anfield still cuts through the noise: not for sale, no exit, and no intention of letting one of Europe’s brightest young wingers slip away.
