Ro-Zangelo Daal lights it up, debate ignites just as quickly.
Two goals in a 5-2 win over Go Ahead Eagles, a sparkling performance for AZ, and suddenly the 18-year-old forward is the new name on everyone’s lips. On Dutch television, in the papers, and—crucially—on international watchlists.
Not everyone is impressed by the noise.
Perez slams the brakes
On ESPN’s Dit was het Weekend, presenter Wouter Bouwman rolls the highlight reel and lets the excitement show. “Things are moving quickly for him,” he says, as Daal’s best moments flash by.
Kenneth Perez has heard enough.
“Take it easy, man,” the analyst snaps, cutting through the studio enthusiasm. “I’m really going mad from all that nonsense about multi-talent, great talent. He’s a young and decent player. Let’s wait and see what it all becomes.”
No soft landing, no diplomatic cushion. Perez refuses to join the chorus.
“All those superlatives about ordinary players... Calm down, please,” he adds, drawing a clear line between a promising outing and the kind of hype that can swallow a teenager whole.
When Bouwman mentions that Daal is already on the radar of the Curaçao national team and could also wait for a possible Netherlands call-up, Perez barely needs words. One dry “Well...” says enough. For him, this is not yet a player around whom you build national-team debates.
Haan sees a rising star
Where Perez sees a decent youngster, Arie Haan sees something far more exciting.
The former Ajax and Netherlands midfielder, now a reporter for De Telegraaf, has gone the other way entirely. He has placed Daal straight into his Team of the Week, and he is not shy about why.
“They kept trying to block off the outside. Then he just went inside,” Haan explains. “He played brilliantly.”
Haan doesn’t stop at praise for the AZ winger. He turns towards the man in charge of the national side.
“It’s good for Xavi that another winger is emerging who is developing so spectacularly,” he says, offering what sounds very much like a nudge in the direction of the Netherlands head coach.
Where Perez wants time and perspective, Haan sees a fresh weapon for a national team that is always on the hunt for wide players who can break open a game.
On Xavi’s radar
The discussion around Daal isn’t just studio talk. According to Algemeen Dagblad, his name is already on a “watchlist” compiled by Xavi, who is keeping tabs on a select group of attacking prospects.
Daal is not alone there. Fellow forwards Lucas Vennegoor of Hesselink and Shaqueel van Persie are also reportedly being monitored by the Spanish coach, a sign that the next generation of Dutch attackers is being mapped out carefully and early.
For Daal, that means his breakout performance against Go Ahead Eagles lands in a very different light. It is no longer just a good afternoon in the Eredivisie. It becomes another data point for a national coach, another argument for or against fast-tracking him.
Perez would rather everyone took a breath. Haan believes the door should already be opening.
Somewhere between those two viewpoints, a young winger at AZ has to prove whether this was just one thrilling Sunday—or the start of something that forces Xavi’s hand.
