Southend United have dipped into the Premier League talent pool, bringing in West Ham United right-back Ryan Battrum on a month’s loan as Kieron Dyer sharpens his promotion push.
The 21-year-old, who can also step into midfield, is no stranger to Roots Hall. He faced Southend in a pre-season friendly for West Ham back in July, a game that clearly left its mark.
"When I heard about Southend's interest I was buzzing," Battrum told the club’s website. He already knows what awaits him. "I've played against them and watched them a lot. Getting crowds of 10,000 in the National League is amazing."
For a young defender trying to break through at a Premier League club, this is the kind of move that can jolt a career forward. Proper crowds. Real jeopardy. A team already humming along near the top of the table.
Dyer’s Southend sit fifth in the early National League standings, having lost just one of their opening seven games. It’s a strong platform. Now he wants depth and edge.
"It's always good to have two players for every position," Dyer said. "He gives Vontae Daley-Campbell great competition at right-back. He's got great energy, power, and strength, and he can also invert which we like our full-backs to do. He ticks all the boxes."
That last detail matters. Southend’s full-backs are asked to step inside, to help build play rather than just hug the touchline. Battrum’s ability to operate in midfield makes him a natural fit for that role, not just a stopgap.
He will not have to wait long to get started. The loanee is available for Tuesday’s home game against Tamworth, where those 10,000 voices he admires may get their first real look at West Ham’s latest prospect in Southend colours.
