Sunderland are about to make their boldest move yet in a summer that screams ambition.
The club have agreed a deal worth just under £30m for Lyon winger Malick Fofana, a statement signing for a side preparing for their first European campaign in 51 years. The 21-year-old is on his way to England for a medical and is expected to sign a five-year contract.
It is a heavyweight fee for a player still at the start of his career: £25.6m up front, with a further £4.3m tied to performance-related add-ons. For Sunderland, who only returned to the top flight last season, it marks a decisive step into a different market.
Fofana, a Belgium forward who came through at KAA Gent before joining Lyon in 2024, is understood to be energised by the move and the chance to lead a new European chapter on Wearside. The Europa League, once a distant memory here, has become a powerful magnet.
This is not a signing made in a vacuum. Arsenal tried to prise Fofana away from Lyon earlier in the window, but the Premier League champions could not reach an agreement on the fee. Sunderland did. That alone changes the perception of where this club now sits in the food chain.
And Fofana will not walk into a dressing room short on new faces.
He is set to join Kevin Danso, with the Austria defender due to arrive from Tottenham on an initial loan that includes an option to buy. Sunderland have already moved to strengthen the back line with Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie, while Jules Ahoka has been added in midfield.
It all follows a seventh-place finish in their first season back in the top flight, a campaign that reopened doors many assumed had been bolted shut for a generation. Now those doors lead to Europe, and Sunderland are spending like a club determined to stay there.
A rising Belgian winger, a rebuilt defence, a deeper midfield and a long European road ahead: Sunderland are no longer just happy to be back. They are building a squad to find out how far this resurgence can really go.
