Trabzonspor’s summer of ambition crashed into a brutal European reality on Thursday night. A club that prised Mohamed Salah from Liverpool and brought Fabinho and Andre Onana through the door were humbled 4-0 by Ferencvaros in Hungary, tumbling out of the Europa League 5-0 on aggregate.
The scoreline hurt. The reaction cut even deeper.
In the immediate aftermath of the defeat, head coach Fatih Tekke, the man who had guided Trabzonspor to third place in the Super Lig last season, tendered his resignation. It was a raw, emotional move from a 48-year-old coach who has lived the club’s colours as both player and manager.
On Friday morning, the club pushed the resignation straight back across the table.

Trabzonspor rejected Tekke’s offer to walk away, describing his decision as a product of the “intense emotional impact” of the Europa League exit. This was not a calculated break, they argued, but a moment of pain.

Tekke stays. For now, the message is clear: the club believes the humiliation in Budapest is a blow, not a verdict.
From Europa League to Conference League
The consequence of the collapse is stark. Instead of lining up in the Europa League, Trabzonspor drop into the Europa Conference League. On Friday, they will learn the six teams they must face in the league phase of UEFA’s third-tier competition.
It is not what the club imagined when it spent the summer building a squad with Champions League pedigree. But the calendar remains full, the spotlight still bright, and the pressure arguably even higher. There will be no hiding place if this group underperforms again.
A blockbuster summer: Salah, Fabinho, Onana
Off the pitch, Trabzonspor have behaved like a club refusing to accept their old limits.
They stunned Europe by landing Mohamed Salah, 34, a Premier League and Champions League winner and the third-highest scorer in Liverpool’s history. Only Ian Rush and Roger Hunt sit above him in the Anfield record books, after 257 goals in 442 appearances since his move from Roma in 2017.
Salah mutually agreed to terminate his Liverpool contract last season. Many expected a move to one of Europe’s traditional giants or a lucrative late-career adventure elsewhere. Instead, he chose Trabzon, the Black Sea, and a project that promised him star status and a central role.
He is not alone. Fabinho, another Premier League winner, has arrived to anchor midfield. Andre Onana has rejoined on loan from Manchester United, adding a high-profile, modern goalkeeper to the mix. These are not the signings of a club content with domestic scraps and European cameos.
Salah wastes no time
If Thursday night showed Trabzonspor’s fragility, Saturday had already hinted at their potential.
In a 2-1 league win over Istanbul Basaksehir, Salah opened his account in style, scoring twice and immediately justifying the fanfare around his arrival. The goals carried a familiar look: sharp movement, ruthless finishing, a player who still sees the goal as his natural destination.
Those strikes were supposed to be a prelude to a long European run. Instead, they now sit as a reminder of what this team could yet become if it finds its balance.
A project at a crossroads
So Tekke stays in the dugout. Salah leads the line. Fabinho and Onana strengthen the spine. On paper, Trabzonspor have never looked more glamorous.
But glamour does not erase a 5-0 aggregate defeat. It does not silence the questions that follow a coach who tried to resign in the heat of the moment, or a club that must now prove its faith in him is more than sentimental.
The Europa Conference League will not carry the prestige the board wanted when it went shopping this summer. It will, however, offer something even more important for this version of Trabzonspor: a test of character.
